This, as you would expect of Puddy_Tat has some great ways of defining London, except that they have forgotton the London Loop or the Capital Ring, which both lay a small claim to defining London BUT, not as much as the coal duty boundaries which go back a hundred years or more, many of which still exist City Posts -- Coal Duty Posts -- Coal Posts -- Coal Tax Posts

    Any other offers?

Simple. Anywhere that's in a London Borough is London.

This brilliant book which came out last year and which I am currently reading answers the OP's question directly.

It may well be direct but does it answer the question to Urban's satisfaction? That is the ultimate test.

If the entirety of the letter prefix of your postcode is one of: N, NW, SW, SE, W, WC, E or EC

    Then you live in London.

Anything else, you live somewhere else, probably somewhere awful, like Solihull or Wales.

A friend used to live close to Tooting BR station and I was surprised to learn he didn't have a London postcode (don't ask me what it was though, can't remember). I struggle to describe Tooting as anything other than London.

Places lke Croydon are London Borough of....

Tooting Station is in Merton which meant it probably got a CR4 post code, but it does have an SW17 postcode.
