What is it with all this "pan fried" meat/fish/whatever?

There's no way industrial deep frying vats, nor the domestic versions can be described as pans.
There is a way: they're metal cooking vessels. I agree it wouldn't be usual, but that does not detract from the fact that deep frying can be done in a pan.

Hell, it can even be done in a wok! (A type of pan).

deep frying can be done in a pan but frequently isn't. In a domestic setting people are to afeared of the fire risk so use a domestic deep fat fryer (which is not a pan). In a commercial setting deep frying in a pan is inneficient and even more dangerous, hence the use of industrial deep fat fryers. Which again, are not pans by any stretch of the imagination.

That's nothing. Walkers Sensations (the ones in the black bags) have written across the front of them "MADE WITH REAL INGREDIENTS". :hmm:

You mean all that time, before they started using real ingredients, I had been munching on pretend potatoes, ostensible oil, and spurious salt? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!

Some lower end restaurants also fry items on flattop ranges/griddle stations - the kind of thing that you'll see your local caff grease up your bacon on occasionally. Pan frying's a bit posher and individual like.

Still, buying a ready meal that boasts of pan frying from the supermarket seems a bit weird and unnecessarily poncy

Ach, I don't really mind them - there's enough heat to purify anything really. Usually just a fry up and a few onions on them.

Still at least it helps explain why 'pan frying' was once a quality assurance for restaurants. Dodgepot can stop getting his tanga briefs in a tangle now.

but normal people don't know that or think of that. normal people think of frying and then think of a normal everyday common-or-garden frying pan as the default tool to use. everything else is to be specified as different from frying (eg deep fry or stir fry). the rise of the term "pan-frying" is just a rise in ponciness and being extra. normal people hate it.

people who say "pan-fry" are bobbins.
