What is hope?

"Hope is the denial of reality" - Margaret Wies
?

or

"Hope is a state of mind, not of the world. Hope, in this deep and powerful sense, is not the same as joy that things are going well, or willingness to invest in enterprises that are obviously heading for success, but rather an ability to work for something because it is good". - Vaclav Havel

Depends what we're hoping for. If it's for editor to find out what politeness means, then forget it, waste of time.

Hoping arsenal are gonna win when the game starts is okay.

Hoping for something to happen futher off in the future is trickier. If it's just a quick wish to oneself, fine, but if it is more consuming than that then hope is a tool designed to mortgage the present in favour of some time in the distance. And that would be a waste of life, since life only exists in the present.

Who needs dictionaries eh...!

PERFECT! fela, you must be my soul brother!

Ask the Editor ;)

ooooohhhh.....

serious question though NoEgo....are you genuinely interested in what people think on all of these subjects? Do you never feel like you want to have your input, or are you just seeking other people's opinions because you already know your own? :)

that is a genuine question btw ^

mighty

I'd like to give my input on that. Asking questions is a healthy practice in my view. Even if you think that you know the answer, someone else may well add something to it, make you adapt it, even change your mind over your own view.

Sometimes i know or understand something, but can't articulate it to the same degree. Often through questions of my own and the answers i get, i am then able to make that leap.

Plus, those that know already don't see...

The more you know the less you see.

We learn from listening and reading. Asking questions of both creates something to listen or read for.

I know you're not saying this, but i'm always surprised how asking questions seems to rile folk.

Another thought jumps into my head.

I hope to be a nobody. And because of my hope i often succeed for periods of time. But then residues of my social conditioning imposes itself on me, and i'm back to the hoping.

Based on this, you can travel between hope and realisation of hope, and then go through the same cycle again.

Hey, i like that. To work for something that is good. Nice angle. I'll have that as my new definition of the word, cheers vaclav.

oh, and barking!

Well...

before my love life improved :D ;) , I used to say "Hope is a further cruel trick played by Fate to torment those already destined to lose".

Fela found the answer I was looking for. Hope that answers the question.
Incidentally if me asking questions is too much for folks ego to take, then they need to ask themsleves why - i.e. a process known as "getting in touch with yourself".

Oh, and another quote from Vaclev Havel:

"Follow those that seek the truth, but fear those that think they have found it"

Toodle-pip!
