What is 'arthouse'?

http://www.broadway.org.uk/

A very good cinema - very few blockbusters (apart from Pulp Fiction which they appeared to get early because Tarantino spoke there a year or so ago during their crime-fest season if I remember rightly).

That place kicks arse. They often have interesting people come in to do introductions to various films, IIRC they had Slavoj Zizek talking about 'A Pervert's Guide to Cinema' a while back. And the bar has one of the best selections of scotch in the whole city :)

28 million is a blockbuster, surely? I guess it depends on the budget

On a worldwide basis? For a film as popularly cited as Shawshank?

The point being made is that its popularity has grown after its cinematic release...

Ordinarily, one would expect a film which is commonly listed in top 5s or whatever, to have done in the 200m+ range...

28m is fuck all when you consider how popular it is now...

i may be wrong on this, but the original arthouse films i think were the nouvelle vague from italy and france which weren't being showed in cinemas in the 60s which tended to concentrate on american films, so 'arthouse' cinemas started to appear to cater for the demand for european films.
