What Happened to Wages?

Also the ineffectiveness of trade unions, the restraints they work under and that the Idea of workplace organising is fairly alien to many in my experience doesn't help either.

When I first started my part time job as an usherette in a theatre; sixteen or so years ago, we got minimum wage with double time after midnight* and time and a half for Sundays and Bank Holidays. We also got a percentage of the sales of sweets and ice cream and programmes.

Now we get minimum wage.

* We all looked forward to Ken Dodd coming. No show of his was ever finished before midnight. Or 1am.
Having attended a Ken Dodd show (in the audience) I can attest to that but he was funny.

The school I worked in had a change of management (became an academy too) they systematically removed all the previous secure staff contracts and replaced them with 12 month ones. That almost counts as a wage drop.

Yeah. 30 years ago, I worked part-time in a supermarket and we got paid double time on a Sunday. Then when I worked part-time in pubs, it was double time on BHs* and a day off in lieu. Imagine there's none of that now.

*Not that I ever really used to work BHs apart from at Christmas as the full timers would generally volunteer. ;).

I spent a couple of years doing shift work in a car parts factory in my early twenties and we got a bonus if we hit rates that had been set by careful busy slacking so were easy and time and a half for hours over eight (you could do twelve). On the night shift you could get a full shift's pay with max bones and take a few hours kip if you hid yourself away in the tool room.

Fucking acid victim?

she is very attractive

How about sleeping off whatever it is you're on?

i worked at the same place for 18 years until just over 4 years ago, being in the same place so long meant you could measure the loss of benefits more than if you moved jobs.

At one point in the early noughties they gave us an extra day of holiday per year, just for nothing, I think there’d been some extra royal BH that year and they decided to just keep giving us that extra day forever more. That was the kind of high point of their generosity.

After that it was the loss of final salary pension (first to new starters, then to everyone), then none of the new staff got Christmas bonuses (1% salary), then post-recession they moved everyone from 37.5hrs to 40hrs with a tiny amount of compensation (like a 1.5% rise, so an hourly pay cut for all), to ‘remain competitive’ whilst all the time boasting of how they were increasing the share price and dividends (share price more than doubled).

The whole atmosphere and working culture just went down the toilet over a decade or so, demoralised experienced staff leaving, probably not seen as a bad thing as they’d get someone new in at a lower wage with less benefits. Proper race to the bottom stuff, and been going on for a couple of decades now. Glad to be out of it, I’m now in the ‘unproductive’ part of the economy doing something worthwhile for half the money. Fuck ‘em.

I find Priti Patel to be an attractive woman. Don’t be reversing over me in your Audi for it.

ffs.

btw, it's not my Audi.

Takes me back to a summer working at Butlins in the 70s - they had a couple of late night cabarets each week. Dodd was a regular and the place was always rammed. The only time we got tipped for waiting tables.

Didn't know at the time he was dodging the taxman

Of course you can ask.

You have as much chance as a fart in a hurricane of me complying with your request, but you can ask.

Oh there's a fair bit of that still in some sectors!

One of my sons finished his apprenticeship last year. He volunteered for a 12hour shift on Boxing Day for which he got a £150 bonus for turning up plus triple time plus a day off in lieu. To top it off they finished the job in seven hours and went home, but still got paid for the full shift.

He reckons he'll hit £60k this year. Although that is for working 45 to 50 hours a week, round the clock shifts, and weekends/bank holidays. Then again a lot of people do that level of overtime and don't get paid for it (teachers, white collar workers, etc) and a lot more do those hours and won't see half that money.

The benefits of a strong union and a skills shortage in a manual/technical job that can't be offshored.

His brother on the other hand is still taking causal shifts warehousing.
