I don't tend to have many conversations about replays except after they've been shown.
As far as I can remember, people have always been paranoid about their club's treatment by referees etc.
I assume when you mean "live game" you are referring to live games being shown on TV.
It depends what you mean by rare. If you are asking if I'm aware of a time before Sky Sports, then the answer is yes.
I seem to remember The Big Match showing games most Sundays, although looking at this article, it seems as if that was just from 1988 (I was 15 at the time).
ETA Your original post also talks about glory hunting. When I was at school, there was always the piss taken out of the glory hunters supporting Liverpool.
