What happened to British Comedy?

I absolutely hated Nighty Night. Totally bland attempt at making "edgy comedy" - which failed as it was neither edgy nor comedy. Awful, nasty little program.

Though IMO British comedy never quite recovered from the beating it took in the 90s, when Red Dwarf went down the pan and American shows like the Simpsons and Seinfeld ran rings around anything we could muster up (and yes, that includes overrated BBC mediocrities like the Royle Family and the Office).

I hated the Royle family, and I hate Early Doors (tho I do give the coppers their dues, they are fucking hilarious, definately got all the best lines) Now I did like Pheonix Nights, but there is another 'northern' comedy which seems to revolve around a working mans club, which is also not in the least bit funny.

Maybe I don't get northern comedy, or maybe I feel that these programs are laughing at northerners rather then with them, that puts me off.

i'm shamelessly bumping this thread to say that there's a new series of two pints of lager currently being aired (series 6) and once agin it is very, very funny

Just wanted to add that I loved Nighty Night. It's always nice to see Mark Gatiss in things he hasn't written for a change.

I love British comedy at the moment. Shameless, Hotel Babylon, Catherine Tate, " pints of Lager and a packet of crisps. It's class! I never really found any of our classic comedies very funny, but then I have been told I have a weird sense of humour ;)

Hotel Babylon isn't a comedy tho dude, its just so bad its laughable. It is supposed to be a lighthearted drama, its just utterly utterly shit and makes you laugh.

I think personally that Hotel Babylon is a poor mans version of Las Vegas, which has far far far superior cast in it, and it has James Caan too, which is always a bonus, not to mention the women in Las Vegas are actually nice to look at, but maybe thats just the thing I have for Vanessa Marcil.

Whats wrong with "My Family" ? - new series last night was great ! - gives me a good belly laugh - though the errant son Nick isnt on it these days !
