What exactly is 'limewire'?

i don't consider myself a thief for using it, i was ripped off by record companies for nearly thirty years until i started downloading, i see it as re-appropriation

Quite, I have over 2000 LPs and 1200 or so purchased CDs. I've done my bit. :D

The plot thickens. I don't like going through people's browser History files, but I feel I should try and unpick this. The service is called linewire (they have limes on their website ).

She (or the linewire site or whatever) appears to have downloaded a programme called utorrent.

What the hell has she done, and why am I trying to spend my Saturday night unpicking it while she is out?

u (mu as in micro) torrent is superb.

I am eternally grateful to the person who directed me to it. :D

sounds lıke some nasty software pretendıng to be lımewıre, go to lımewıre.com and get the proper one for free

So in summary she has paid 27 quid for some software that should be free, and the 2 tracks she has downloaded on it are in fact illegal downloads?

Have I got that about right?

In plain english, just how far up shit creek is she?

Presumably she can write the 27 quid off, despite the fact she claims she has 7 days to cancel.

Also, presumably the two tracks she has downloaded are likely to be chock full of viruses etc?

yes wate of money
the peer 2 peer is 'contentious' but i don't think anyone has been done for it yet, theoretically you are sharing with a mate

hmmm sounds dodge, i bet she won't get it back

not necessairily, they could be straight mp3's

i've downloaded loads over the years and never been done so i wouldn't stress too much abou tthat at the mo

Some comfort at least, about the viruses. I've already told her she has brought software and not downloads, she failed to belive me.

I shall tell her once more and if she still don't belive me that is her look out.

ı dont thınk ıts possıble for an mp3 fıle to be ınfected wıth a vırus, only .exe fıles and the lıke can have vıruses

anythıng you download for free ıs ıllegal afaık, but there ıs no reason to worry, sınce everybody ıs doıng ıt...

given that she has managed to pay for a free program, she doesn't sound like the kind of user that is going to notice a filename like

robbie_williams_angels_126KBPS_NOTFAKE_mp3.exe

And no not everything you download for free is illegal. It's all to do with copyright, many bands have released whole albums for free.
Soulseek was originally created as a p2p network for electronic musicians to freely distribute their work.

If your paying anything for limewire, then youve been ripped off I'm afraid.

I occasionally use it for single tracks, I used to use it a lot when i first got the internet for videos and stuff but now use warez as its much quicker and easier :)

oh and as mentioned stay away from .exe files on there and make sure you preview anything not long after you started downloading, theres nothing worse than spending hours downloading you thought was the latest action film, only to find out its some german pissing/fisting video :o

For anything other than more obscure music (as taxamo said, soulseek is good for this) the big torrent sites are far better anyway; Demonoid.com and piratebay.org are the best imo. uTorrent is perfect for this, but it's probably worth deleting the uTorrent that she's already downloaded and making sure you get the official release (utorrent.com).

Do you know what, I told her about all this and she didn't seem in the slightest bit bothered.............so I'm damn sure I'm not gonna worry about it.

Well that was a Saturday night well spent, wasn't it:rolleyes:

Thanks anyway, people....
