What effect do you expect a recession to have on your work?

I've got more work than I could possibly handle at the moment, I suspect that investment in core IT services should be okay, especially ones that have a strong ROI and cut costs/people.

I'm going to be starting freelancing soon so I hope this is the case.

think carefully. During the last recession I realised all but one of the clients I'd worked for the previous year had gone. pftt, not there anymore, gone out of business!

Me and Magic Sam are both civil servants and our business streams will both be busier in a recession but they are cutting staff.

The job I have just applied for is with Shelter, I have no idea how that would be affected in terms of funding.

or even worse, they collapse after you've done the work but before they pay you

not hugely I'd of thought....touch wood, am an accountant working for a retail industry that as retail goes is as I see it as recession proof as you can get....we shall see though not particularly fussed

I've just started a job with a company that sells upscale sparkly clothing which I imagine will be one of the first things to give in a recession :(

Stella, I was just thinking how well you'd done. You lasted until your second fucking day, albeit over lunchtime. And you've probably been glued to the other place too.

:D:D:D I can do what I want at lunctime innit

If its a really bad recession I will become busier, I work mainly with Homeless people and people who are having a real fuckin hard time of life.

our client base is all lawyers, so there is some concern, as there will be cutbacks at most city firms: generally though cutbacks normally hit staff, not the types of services that we provide.

I work in a publicly funded sector and I'm pretty sure my job is safe for now. We're still making cuts though, and have for several years now. :(

I've just said, the fact that we have had a growing economy for so long- i.e. the longer the boom the worse the bust.

Somebody feel free to tell me why this is wrong.

You stated for fact that there IS recession coming. Other than tabloids etc, who says there is definitely one coming? ;)

God help you. My mum is a pretty senior Shelter manager and from the way she tells it, the charity has been going down the pan for years and its relationship with its employees is now a state of out-and-out war between them and the directors. She'd tell you to run away as fast as you can, I think.

Personally, I'd take that with a bit of salt but I would investigate working there very thoroughly before committing yourself.
