What does M&S actually do well?

cumberland pie. it's quite cheap too.

cream buns. most of their cakey dessert type things are good value.

i only buy what's on special offer.

Streatham's nearby - it has a great greengrocers and a well stocked grocers, a couple of delis too, there's a butcher and a deli even nearer too - all you need without having to give your cash to a supermarket

What time they open until?

I don't think of M&S as a supermarket, though I'm aware there is an element of 'fingers in ears lalalalalala' about it.

dressing gowns. at least, my lovely monk's robe dressing gown was a gift from M&S and it's great.

They scare me :D

actually, I'm not that adventurous with food and what with b/f being even less adventurous...

oh, and due to cholesterol, barely eat cheese now

I don't like olives or pickled stuff

er, what else do they have? :D

Bread, sausages, cheese, herbs, pesto, pasta, rice, cheese, some veg, spices, cooked meats

My M&S bakery does an excellent wholemeal loaf. It is very expensive at £1.09 for a small loaf but absolutely delicious and quite often still warm. When I get home I have a slice of bread and spread before completing the unpacking of my bag.

They also do the best ready-made blackcurrant cheesecake I have found in a supermarket. Although I hear Lidl are comparable on this.

I buy milk and freshly squeezed fruit juice from there. I shop there regularly after I have been to the local market which is a few doors away. I spend anywhere between £3.50 and £4.00 a week in M&S.

As I queue up in M&S with my pint of semi-skilled milk :D and rucksack full of vegetables and meat from the market I see people buyng plastic packs of leeks or other veg at much higher prices than I have paid. They also have ready meals and pies and things like that. But then I have time to cook from raw ingredients and these people just want to put something in a microwave and be eating it within minutes.

yeah, I actually went into that one in New Park Road the other week just looking for plain white bread. They didn't do any plain white. b/f doesn't like all these seeded/nutted loaves.

Cheese - explained already. Sausages - same as. Cooked meats - have been a bit chicken when it comes to delis and meats.

I've also been into that Portuguese one in Brixton and either because prices weren't displayed or because I didn't know what I was looking at, I'm always too embarrassed to ask :o

You need to be more adventurous :)

I know, but by the time I started buying my own shopping I was already embarrassed at looking an idiot 'cos I had on idea about weights/cuts etc.

I remember when I was 18 asking in the market for a couple of pounds of mushrooms (I think that was what I asked for). I came away with a huge bag of mushrooms as I obviously had no idea about weights. I was too embarrassed to say I only wanted a quarter of that amount :D

9PM I think

If there was a proper proper butcher and a decent greengrocers on my way home open til 9pm, then I would much prefer to shop there than M&S, but I think as Streatham is past me I don't think of it unles it's a saturday and I'm up there for summat else.

I'd absolutely love a good butcher, baker and greengrocer to open up til 9pm within 5 mins walk of my house. All in a row, next door to each other, in the way that minimarkets are. :)

Well, there is a baker and greengrocer open that late within 5 minutes, the butcher is even nearer, but not open that late

The Tile Centre would be an ideal place for us don't you think?

Wraps and pasta salads are good, as are their party nibbles. And, as has been said, the sweet stuff. Mmmm!

I only buy food from M&S if someone gives me vouchers. Got some nice cold meats and salad last time - vine ripened tomatoes that actually are vine-ripened and taste like they did 20 years ago is about the only thing I can remember that was special. They are supposedly fussier than other supermarkets about the quality of the fresh produce but I can't recall their ready meals coming out as any less dire than the rest, healthwise.

One thing they did remarkably poorly up until recently was grasp the concept of credit/debit cards. I stopped shopping for clothes there after too many times discovering I didn't have enough cash on me and they seriously expected me to go to the bank to get cash on the grounds that "we have our own credit card, why would we accept anyone else's?" Umm, maybe because I don't want a separate bit of plastic for every shop I go into? John Lewis were exactly the same. I think it's a huge part of the reason M&S were doing so badly a few years ago.

Those little Santini tomatoes are nice

Most M&S stuff is a bit mediocre unless it's massively carb- or dairy-heavy .. viz:
Sesame bagels (M&S are miles better than anyone else's)
Cheese straws ("all butter" ... and plenty of it I think)
Berry cheesecake, melting choc puddings etc (I think M+S might have to start sponsoring a cardiac ward somewhere)

I very rarely buy any food items from M&S as they seem very expensive - their ready to eat fruit packs are loads dearer than in supermarkets for instance.

However, I do buy underwear and Tshirts from there sometimes and they had some brilliant value heavy drinking glasses for 50p
Also got a nice cutlery set at a bargain price and I occasionally buy a plant as their quality is very good.

They do some really nice salad-y type things. Their "superfood" salad is lovely for a packed lunch - although really quite pricey. They do some nice hummous and I really like their edamame bean salad too.

At the end of the day it's really those kind of ready-meal type things that they excel in which are expensive, but good for a treat, or when you can't be bothered - especially as quite a few of them are pretty healthy, all things considered.

They also do, which I keep meaning to buy, a 9% red wine (as opposed to all the 11-13%s out there). This would be useful for me as I do love red wine, but I tend to knock it back far too quickly. I could either dilute my wine with water (as in eastern Europe), or buy a lower % wine. I've not managed to bring myself to buy any yet, but it would be good for me to do so tttt!

Oh yes, I hardly ever need to buy tiles. :)

There could be a tiny little twee market with an organic greengrocers, organic butchers, organic bakers, a delicatessen, and a grocers selling ecover products, and with tiny twee prices too. :)

'party food' nibbles, crisps, cakey things, confectionery, sandwiches, pasta salads, crisp salads.

The convenience of not having to go around a massive supermarket when you only want a thing or two. Superior customer service, they will carry your bags for you, call a cab for you and bring you over to it when it's ready (in the Leeds store anyway)

Some of the per una clothes are quite nice.
