My iPhone is a gadget.
It just so happens that one of the functions of the gadget is that i can make a call with it if i need to thereby saving me the bother of having to find a nearby landline to use. Not an option i need often.
The things i use it for the most are:

Tube maps and Train info
Finding my way around with maps and GPS
Playing Chess and Solitaire.

Looking up answers to stuff
Keeping appointments / Calendar
Alarm
A 45 minute countdown at football matches
Stopwatch timing injury time at football matches
Finding out what that song is thats being played
Playing music
Watching the occasional video clip
Watching the occasional TV program in bed
