What do you understand fashion to be about?

Style is an art form. Humans can make art by using paints on paper, or clay in different shapes, or cloth in different designs that are hung on the wall - clothes are an art form in just the same way. Fashion commercialises style, but it also makes it into one of the most accesible art forms out there.

Plus, of course, there are different fashions for different cultures, countries, age groups, sub-cultures, etc. What you wear tells people a lot about you, no matter how hard you try to be neutral. Even trying to be neutral says a lot about you. Other animals have fur that changes with the season, feathers that signify mating periods, markings that say which group you belong with - fashion is that, magnified.

Just because a lot of the people involved in fashion are twats doesn't mean that all fashion is worthless. Of course, fashion can very helpful indeed in marking out twats to the rest of the general populace.

Plus it's a lot easier to buy the clothes that are currently available in the shops than go looking for things that are 'different'.

Often cheaper, too. Primark (and the like) is, on the whole, cheaper than secondhand shops - for kids' clothes in particular. Those clothes are probably sewn by other children by the light of their ancestors' cremation pyres, but you know, you need to keep that fiver back for that evening's cider. :D

imo fashion is all about shallow smackheads with a taste for androdgony making clothes to be disposable and increasingly unwearable stupid looking clothes like those ultradrainpipes wtf?

:D but:( but:hmm:

Are we talking catwalk clothes? They are about getting attention from the media and many do not often go into production. It is the tamer versions that make the stores.

I always though fashion was gay men design clothes that will fit girls who are shaped like young men but is then sold and marketed to women who have curves and bumps.

Why is there this big idea that people who work in fashion are shallow or twats? I've met a mix bag of people who work in the industry and they are hard working individual, often rather ordinary and not full of airs and graces or pretentious.

Interestingly in the book I reading about fashion, it talks about the long association between fashion and being considered to be fickle, dumb, shallow. It also mentions the association with deceit and triviality.

Has anyone mentioned the annual fashion shows where young women are sent down the catwalks half naked ?

Is it soft porn, or is it Hans Christian Andersen ?

Well, the majority of people viewing it are looking at it for design ideas. And when you see loads of naked flesh it has limited impact.

There is loads of art/graphics which has pornographic undertones.

but:rolleyes:

i belive we are talking catwalk to an extent hence the whole concept of fasion as other posters have stated - there is a difference between fashion and style and a whole issue as to wether street syle influences 'fashion' etc

does not really count as evidence in any case ab fab and bruno came from somewhere....in any case why not make clothes for people of all sizes why the obssesion on size zero ? why are the women who work in the industry not casuing uproar about it?

are you reading the abfab xmas annual:p

And what do you think of it? .

i think fashion is bullshit in general. planned obsolesence to make more money. change fashion every year or two so that the people wearing the old stuff look stupid and then are forced to buy new shit...

than god i'm not female cause i'd probably buy into it :p

I think of there as being different kinds of fashion really... the fashion of a sportswear-toting teenager is different to that of an arty student, is different to that of a wannabe 'It Girl' is different to that of an emo kid and so on.

I'm very aware of fashion, as I find it interesting, though not a follower as I just can't be arsed trying to keep up. I have issues now that the high street is so heavily fashion-led - I think I;ve mentioned here before the impossibility of finding something you want if it's not 'in season'. I've had times in recent years where I've not been able to find, or only able to find with great difficulty, a short clingy dress, a long dress, and a mid-length dark denim skirt because those shapes/colours just weren't 'in' and nowhere stocked them.
