What do you think about Redknapp?

One thing I will say about the Toon though, which is very different from teams like Spuds, is that they really are the team of the city.

When I went to the West Ham game (in the Toon end) I noticed that it was almost impossible to select a 'type' who was at the game. With London teams it's easy: our fans are all either white-van driving burberry wearing nouveau riche, dodgy nutters, or eccentrics; Tottenham's are all middle management and norf london cockneys. Arsenal's are the most middle class.

It was impossible to generalise like that with the Toon fans; there were just about every type you could imagine there.

This sort of happens all over the country when people support their local teams :p

Right about Arsenal fans though, whenever I meet them at Paddington after they've been at home they're the most identikit, brand new replica shirt, carrier bag from the megastore, expensively attired, Berkshire bound fans anywhere. They all look like cunts to be fair

Yeah but we have had frank lampard, dicanio, joe cole, tevez and we still have a hell of a lot of bullshit to suffer through.

dave

Sounds awful. Especially that FA Cup final you played in. My heart rends in two at your tale of woe

If i was a bit older i would have chucked sir trev in the mix as well and im sure i can find a load more almost world class players that have played for us at various points.

Hell same with every premier club. Bolton habe had jay jay okotcha and loads of others! Good players every so often doesn't mean you cant suffer.

Its like saying rich people cant have problems/issues. tis silly.

dave

What Dave said. The thing with teams like West Ham is the thing of nearly getting there and then being dumped on all over again for one reason or another.

That's like the middle classes complaining they never get to be chairman of the board. Sorry but from down here it's kind of hard to see where you're coming from

see renegade!

one fa cup final every 20 years means that getting relegated twice(in my time) having your entire team raped by your rivals, lossing your entire academy(except anton), and the tevez saga becomes meaningless.

No it isn't, the problems of the rich are almost always navel gazing shite which are alleviated by having fuckloads of cash so you never have to deal with the issues the poor do.

Sorry, still struggling to see your point here

oh yeah, I forgot about the interminable never-ending 2 year saga that every other 91 teams in the league went through... or when they sold all their players to their local rivals for peanuts before almost going bust... or then seeing those players going on to form the major part of the England team and a Champion's League final and sitting there thinking "that could have been us, if only"...

but still, you're in League 1 you working class hero you.

Yes, you're the only team that's sold some players and almost went bust. Well done.

Anyone else in the queue to prove my point?

I love the way Newcastle fans try to play up the whole 'poor benighted us, we're cursed with supporting such a shit club' angle. Yeah, seeing Shearer, Asprilla, Ginola and the rest at your team in your lifetime must be such a trial

See how I look bigger if I stand here than if I stand over there? It's called perspective, get a little :)

difference is tho, yes we have a team worth millions, and yes we got to see us in FA Cup finals, and UEFA semis and Champ. league etc etc

but what the club as become now, still has good players, still in the premier league, but we've seen 2 of our own players get carded for fighting each other on the pitch, about 5 players have been in the dock in as many years, graeme souness, fuckin keegan coming back and then storming out after a couple of months, one of the dodgiest chairman in the country sell the club to a complete idiot who it turns out doesn't have any money and got bored of the club after a year....

on the field I agree it's frustrating but we aren't exactly terrible most of the time, but the fact that the club is run like a colombian soap opera is the 'thing'. at least you like your club, even if they are shit it's never going to be a laughing stock like newcastle frequently is

you should never have brought back keegan, whose time ran out in the 90s, and stuck with Allardyce - sod the romanticism, build the base and then add on, and now you've neither one thing or the other. Keegan is an idiot. Ashley is an idiot. Redknapp - back to the point - is also an idiot.

Can I just point out that the Geordie fans are as culpable as anyone in turning the club into a soap opera. Hell, the bulk of the fools were still calling for King sodding Kev's return despite him being mentally damaged goods and having a record worse than Allardyce, who could have been the long term planner they needed. They're the ones who've tried to run one of Britains' richest men out of the club, you know the one who threw in bundles of his own cash to reduce debt and takeover the club, at a time when there's a whopping recession and no white knight in sight.

Hardly as though Ashley will be falling over himself to invest with that in mind, nor will investors be beating a path to the North East to experience some hysterically misguided fan passion.

Precisely!

I've been to Orient a few times and in some ways I reckon following a team like that must be much less stressful.

honestly like, I am so so glad that they sacked Allardyce, when he was in charge that was some of the worst football Newcastle had played for years, I agree that what Newcastle need is to get a decent manager and let him choose who he buys and sells and give him a few years to steady the club, the reason the players keep fucking about is cos there is no boss. but I am glad that we didn't give Allardyce that chance cos his style of football is boring as fuck and would never get us anywhere above 12th where we always seem to finish anyway

i'll never forget how bad we were under allardyce, there would be about 5 games in a row where we didn't even have a shot on goal

but i agree about the keegan thing, specially when the bbc turned up and filmed all those drunks outside SJP after he quit, it was 11 o clock on a tuesday morning, most Newcastle fans weren't protesting and singing keegan wonderland, they were at work ffs

Yeah, the media does give the impression that the people up here are really OTT in their following of the team. In reality, saturday turns up, they go to the match, and then they go home.

well compared to a lot of prem clubs i suppose newcastle fans are OTT in that we fill our stadium even when we aren't winning the league and actually sing and shout at games for more than 5 minutes
