Sitting room, it's what my parents always called it.

me too

not many of us about according to the poll, all these posh people with living rooms:(

I thought a drawing room was the quiet room where all the women went to draw and knit, leaving the men to sit around the table, smoke and drink and discuss topics of the day.

when I was a kid we had a front lounge and a back lounge. the back lounge was the one we used, the front when visitors came. although that changed in later years, not sure why...

now, our main "living" area is a sitting area attached to the kitchen. We have a room off that with a tv, which is the tv room.

We have a living room (where the telly is, and the stove, and the dinner table, and the comfy sofa) and a music room (where the computer and most of the books and cds and all the instruments live - anything we don't want the kids getting into). We couldn't call the living room the front room because it's actually to the side of the house, not the front... front door opens directly onto the stairs, to the right is a door to the living room, to the left a door to the music room (which the estate agent called dining room/3rd bedroom)
