What do you call the device you use to change channels on your television?

When I was a kid we called it the box for some reason.

My brother recently moved in with his girlfriend and came home complaining that a whole bunch of names that he thought were real words used by everyone turned out to be made up and he was looking like a fool in front of his girlfriend and her mom :D

Now me and the boyfriend just say remote or thing.

It's when you get to which remote that it all goes pear shaped. THAT ONE. The DVD thingy. No, FFS, the one over there! Oh, give it here

My mum's old enough to call it The Clicker. I can still remember remotes that clicked.

My exboyfriend was so dissapointed when I asked for "the thing" and it didn't require the removal of any clothing to find it.

It's also called "the remote", "the clicker" and more recently "da box."

The Fat Controller to distinguish it from the thin controller. I like zapper though as well - especially spelled Zappa as suggested in a post above. Where's Frank Zappa would be a good question.

Don't have a telly but when I lived my parents it was the doofer, the dooberydosh, the zapper, the thingy, the 'erguh' which was a sound for when we couldn't get out one of the other words but it was virtually never 'the remote.

In a deaf household, one can actually have to bang tables or the floor or actually get up and wave manically to get the attention of someone staring vacantly at the TV so you can make jabbing motions at them.

Would it not just be easier to go over to the telly? :p
