What do people know about the IWW

one of the problems of having to to physically collect dues for a union like the IWW is that members are often scattered all over the show, many many miles from anyone else. Even in Sheff there were only a couple of members until recently, and no one was interested in getting any more organised really. Collecting te three quid a month of them by hand would, even here, have been a right pain in the arse, and much harder in other parts of the country where there are even fewer members.

Repost from Libcom, for the benefit of Shevek:

Next meeting of manchester IWW branch is 16th June at the Town Hall Tavern, Tib Lane M2 4JA. It's very close to the Town Hall
Meeting is open to prospective members who can join on the night.

belboid...

firstly as we have pointed out several times now *you can pay by standing order* and you have been able to for several years.

secondly, yes we were and yes they still are interested in getting organised. You left very early on. I know i tried to contact you a few times early on but it wasn't successful,a dn then you left. In the end i think it was all change cos the meeting we called where Tyne IWW came up and talked to us and doled out the membership gear had no original sheffield members.

I mean i'm not bothered at all, its just a bit of a mad coincidence that i am actually what you are talking about here, having been in sheffield at that time!

I'm sure they'd appreciate your experience if you got involved :)

mm, I know you can pay by SO - in fact I was the first on the thread to say so :p

I was referring to the time before you lot joined, I never left, but never had anyone get in touch with me, or reply to my mails! Summat amiss somewhere there...

er sorry, you said 'i've left' on MATB or the Trolling Gang - thats why i didn't chase you up.

If you hadn't......

fair play but i am talking about at workplaces

OK, pulling rank eh? :p

Like I said in theory you're right, but what happens when reps are shite at collecting dues, especially from people they don't even work with.

My suggestion (a regular ring round/visit) has the best of both worlds regular contact and efficiency...

I defo agree on the closed shop though.

he he!

well yes i know what you mean but then the union, any union, doesn't work does it?? collecting subs FORCES you into a REAL strong union .. you have kind of proved my point!
