What digital music 'filing' software should I use?

tbh, I'd like genre tags to be non-exclusive, so I can file something under Electronic, Techno and Chillout, for example. But that's not really workable.

Yeah, that'd be good. Another mammoth task though.

You're doing it by year, too. Year record released or recorded? Half my 60's albums are re-releases from recently (remastered, with bonus tracks etc). Wouldn't do to have them turn up on a nineties mix. Oh no.

Now, can someone please tag this thread 'anally retentive'? Thanks. :D

A lot of people are saying good things about the open source Songbird software...

I found it a bit weak for browsing your collection compared to Windows Media player. Otherwise it looked pretty good. If they made it a bit easier to navigate I'd change over to it. WMP can get a bit slow dealing with a big load of mp3's like mine.

I HATE It when an old album gets re-released with extra tracks. I mean, do you tag it under the year it was released or the year of the reissue?

This stuff keeps me awake. :(

Original tracks originial year, new tracks new year

Once I'd got my artist, album and genre tags sorted, i moved onto album art. There are progs to help automate that. Now, when I scan through the albums in itunes, I get the covers of pretty much everything.

Now, I'm adding Year information, so I can dial up "60s Rock I haven't listened to recently"

It's all a little bit uneccesary. But I guess this is a replacement for a a Dymo labelling machine and index cards habit :D

My friend, you could be writing a symphony instead of doing this :D

It's all a bit sad isn't it?

For a while I had this thing where I wanted to get it down to the fewest, broadest genres possible - 'cos frankly I can't be much bothered with tedious sub-genre divisions - but in the end it was just taking too damn long and I lost sight of the point of it.

Could do with a bit of a reorganise though and I'm seriously considering another genre year zero......................... is it really worth the effort?

Moving genres round isn't really all that much hassle. DO IT YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO :D

I've been using media monkey for this. It's not the best looking media player in the world, but it's helped me tag 50% of my collection with album art, issue dates, label names etc.
