What did you want to be when you grew up?

In order of yearning:

5 - a ballerina (kindly mother informed me I was too clumsy to be one)

7 - a vet (changed me mind at 9 when I found out how long they have to be in college for)

10 - a nurse (until I realised I'd have to wear a frock every day)

14 - a journo (still wouldn't mind that actually...)

16 - something in the forces, but only so I could get to fuck off round the world for free. I lasted as long as it took me to slouch into the RAF office wearing leather jacket and torn jeans, and be patronised :D

17 - HGV driver (got seriously put off that by a mate of me dad's who banged on and on about how women were not liked by other truckers, and how I'd have to do all my own roping and sheeting, and no one else would help or talk to me. Thanks for that, you utter gobshite)

Kinda just drifted after that and gave up on having any dreams *can you hear the violins play?*

Apart from...always wanting to be in a band, just playing crap pubs, and being allowed (and maybe paid) to tootle away on me harmonicas :D

Despite The Falklands War, despite already showing an interest in Youth CND, and despite being fairly scared of the open sea, I honestly went through a brief phase when I was about 15 of seriously considering joining the navy! :o

Like also wanting to be a long-distance trucker, I just saw it as a way to travel the world. :o (-Swanning off on a gap year was never an option.)
Dya know, I just posted mine on the end of this thread before reading it all (it's not an argument ;) ), and it's funny seeing you say the same things. The trucking and the forces, that's all they meant to me, a chance to travel. I'd never heard of the idea of just saving up to go and do it until I was in me mid 20s. We just didn't do that sorta thing on a council estate!

i don't understand the question :(

i never knew what i wanted to be and still don't. for 20 years i've had a succession of jobs that have been anything from alright, to amazing, to making me cry when the alarm went off in the morning.

when i was a teen i flirted with the idea of being a sound engineer/singer/roadie, which i managed to blag my way through for a few years but my hearing is knackered, i can't sing and the novelty of being a roadie wears off pretty quick

right now i'm doing a job i love, for lots of cash, which is mucho  but i'd never thought of doing it until someone offered me the position and fuck knows what i'm going to do after this

people who have always known what they wanted to do scare the shit out of me. a bit like people who get a position and then work on getting promoted. i don't care enough to go for promotion. i work, i get paid, i go home. suits me ta :)

Something with trains. At first a driver, and then when I was old enough to realise that they don't have steam engines any more I wanted to work for the National Railway Museum, especially after my dad and I went there one quiet day and ended up chatting to the chief engineer who crawled out from between the Mallard's wheels with an oil can and an oily rag. He let me climb on the engines you're not usually allowed to: my dad has a photo of me sitting in Mallard's driving seat. I wanted his job thereafter!

Then an archivist. Very, very sad for a 12-year-old. :D

I think I wanted to be a dancer til I saw the state of ballerinas calf muscles once they age  Went off that idea.

14/15 - HGV driver, didn't know what I was going to do til I was old enough to sit the testthough, I did consider becoming a mercenary. This would have involved UK army, foreign army(UK didn't do gun training for females at the time), kill people :D I was not a happy teenager in some ways.

I wanted to do something with explosives. Special effects or demolicion.

Fortunatley circumstance and time conspired against me.

too many things

Architect, Policeman, Primeminister, Mayor of a Local Government, MI5, Artist, Rapper, Scriptwriter, Footballer, Transport Planner, Dustbin Man, Celebrity, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle, Ghostbuster, WWF Wrestler, Animator, Journalist, Writer, Author, Scarface, Robocop, Newsagent, Lottery Winner, Product Designer, Interior Designer, Cartographer, Town Planner, Quantity Surveyor, Porn*, Pimp, Male Escort, Nightclub Owner....

i kinda actually have done or had experience of a few of those including

Porn* (only amateur)
Pimp - only fancy dress but had bare bitches
Artist - only graffiti artist
Scriptwriter - i wrote a script for Ironopolis Film Company but they didnt want it
Footballer - i made 2nd division team for a brief period
Journalist - well i appeared in a national newspaper article
Scarface - i tried dealing drugs
TownPlanner/Quantity Surveyor - done work experience as these

now i want to be (still) a writer/author and primeminister

I wanted to be a writer from the age of about 6, but people said you coudn't make a living from writing books, it was better to be a journalist. So I decided when I was 7 to be a journalist.

It took me until the age of 27 to realise that 7-year-olds know fuck all about careers.:(

Pilot lack of maths and or any form of hand to eye cordination put paid to that cant even keep a flight simulator airborne :( .

Now I want to be everything: counsellor, fashion designer, summat in nutrition, journalist, campaigner, nurse, librarian (really want to be a librarian) and yet I have no idea what I want to do with my life.

I've managed to narrow it down to librarian and comedy actress :)

Work are gonna put me on a 4 day First Aid at Work course (which I'm really excited about :o ) so that will temporarily take care of my "nursey" instincts :D

hmmm, well, all you've got to do now is learn to read and tell jokes and that's you sorted :D

*runs away giggling*

Like the rest of 'em

Btw, fuckheads, I said "comedy actress" not "stand up comedian" eh? eh????

Fuckin'......I fuckin' keel you

From very wee till the age of 20 onwards I think the main ones went something like dancer, actress, doctor, journalist, psychologist. I guess the last two were the only actual seriously considered things.

I never really had the whole "I have no idea what I want to do", at each stage of my life it was quite easy to pick something. Which sometimes worries me.

Hmmmmmm.

I have had 7 years to change my mind and I've gone through a lot to get where I am now so I guess my final decision must either be due to me really wanting to do it, a fundemental lack of imagination or pure stubbornness. :D

When I was little I wanted to be a fashion designer most in the world. I still make clothes for myself...god forbid I make some for anyone else...they'd still be waiting 2 years later...
Comedy actress is a good thing, I see you as the batshit crazy one in Green Wing. Can I be the batshit crazy one in the IT Crowd? ;)

I don't think I gave it much thought. I think I wanted to be an artist for 2000ad, then I think I wanted to work in TV or as an actor or something, then in sound recording or in a band.

I did art at collage, lost intrest for music which I did at collage which later became my job. I then somehow got a job in TV by mistake which I hate eventhough thats what I wanted to do when I was a teenager.

Why did I not continue down that 2000ad path?

The first job I remember wanting, when I was very small, was as a painter. Not an artist, mind, but a painter & decorator.
