What cookbook should I buy?

What about the new "How to Cheat" type tome from Delia? Probably got heaps of shortcuts and probably reduced from the RRP I'd say...

I realise this may not be the kind of book you have in mind, but the Green & Blacks cook book is actually really lovely. I borrowed it off my mum to make christmas presents and it has got some disgustingly nice stuff in it.

Also I've just bought a book from Amazon marketplace which might be good for you Trashy, it's an out of print book called New Food for a Vegetarian Family and has lots of ideas for baby food, lunch boxes, child friendly dinners as well as grown up every day and entertaining stuff. (no I'm not pregnant, again it's a book that mum has and I just really like it).

MsT, I'm going to have to print of your list of recommended cookbooks just to prove to the other half that I DO NOT have too many cookbooks :D

Why can't you just buy a fiction book or two?

I'm a bit  that MsT has 15 books she likes atm, so I'm guessing she has even more.

I think I have bought ONE recipe book in my entire life. I have others, that have been handy downs and they all sit in the drawer and rarely see the light of day tbh.

Yup! I have loads more. :o:D

You're just not that into food though, are you gemini?

No no. I want to splurge the whole lot on a beautiful shiny new cookbook. Preferably with a ribbon :D

Lots of good ideas there Ms T - cheers. I will do some browsing tomorrow. :)

I have loads of cookbooks too - a whole dresser full. I buy them all the time, to read and cook from. I get most of my fiction from the library as I only read them once,so I only buy if I really WANT. I always go back to Nigel Slater, Delia, some Nigella (Feast and How to Cook). I recently bought

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Creators-In...r_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=gateway&qid=1202922867&sr=8-1

cos it has some amazing recipes using local produce (Irish cheeses, smoked salmon etc), and also a Low GL cookbook because I like my grub too much and I am now Mrs Lard. Oh and I also picked up the Pret cookbook, which has some great lunchy type things in it (although my husband took the piss about that saying 'why the fuck do you need a recipe book to make a sandwich?:D)

So, we need more specifics! Do you like fancy food or plain? Curry or Italian? Narrow it down a bit FFS!

Thai Food by David Thompson http://www.amazon.co.uk/Thai-Food-D...=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1202923364&sr=1-2
Very shiney (pink silk cover) and definitely has ribbons, maybe even 2

It's very interesting, but most of the recipes seem so daunting that I've hardly cooked any - huge lists of ingredients to make the pastes, then loads more to make the dishes.

Funnily enough that's exactly the book I was thinking of. :D No, that's too complicated - I've got a Thai cookbook and I make stuff from it very little because it's so fiddly.

Right, a bit of clarity. I like cooking but I eat a lot of stir frys and spicey food. My son is now starting to move beyond toast and yoghurts and I want to make food that I like but that he can/will eat too. It needs to be stuff that I can make fairly quickly. At the moment the only things I can think of are things like roasts or cottage pie but they're dull.

Does that help at all? I'm trying to avoid cooking twice basically!

Oops, it's Nigel Slater's The 30 Minute Cook, not 30 Minute Meals.

Subtitled: The best of the World's Quick Cooking

Here are some random recipe titles flicking through that I reckon you and Foal could both like eating as he grows up

Baked asparagus with pancetta
Goat cheese & olive aubergines
Purple Sprouting broccoli and boiled eggs
Greens with bacon and chilli
Cauliflower with creme fraiche and bacon
Roast new potatoes with mushrooms and breadcrumbs
Tomato and olive arts
Chinese leaves, avocado and orange salad
Red leaves mushrooms and cheddar salad
Pached skate with Thai flavours and its broth
Trout saltimbocca
Parmesan chicken
Chicken with orange and mint
Mustard and vinegar chicken
Ten Minute pigeon
Lamb chops with onion mustard and chickpea puree
Stir fried pork with winter greens
Sausage with lentils
Peach and Almond Couscous
Leek tarragon and mushroom risotto
Coconut rice
Grilled plums and blackberries with hot mascarpone and sugar
Blueberry muffins with creme fraiche
Baked bananas with passion fruit
Baked pears with honey and juniper

etc.

and that was from just flicking though. I use this book all the time and it has never let me down.

Any Nigel Slater really though. They generally all have a good selection of relatively quick things, without dumbing down (which I think Nigella does too much with her new one), and a good variety of types of recipes and food.

How do you know what to cook, or do you just use a few memorised staples?

ooh they sound lovely and perfect for the foal too. I eat a lot of salad (trying to lose weight) but the foal isn't overly impressed by lettuce. I thought I might have it but I've checked and I've got Real Food, Real Fast Food and Real Fast Puddings. I wonder if I could get 30 minute cook and Kitchen Diaries for my 20 quid? Or is that greedy? Nigel would approve though ;)

Not quite, but nearly. :)

Have a look at Home Cook by Alistair Hendy as well - it's full of great recipes that I think the foal would like too. Including the best chilli, evah.

Do this! You won't regret it - both books are fab. Diaries is real foody porn - Nigel S is a great writer. His recipes are spot on too.

I loved Toast. And I read Real Food in bed :o

Food Diaries is really good for just reading too because it's more than just recipes. There are lots of bits which are just him writing about what he's been eating, or semi-recipes based on what he happens to have in the fridge that day.

The new Hugh Fearnleywotsit book 'Fish' is damn good. Not really a traditional cookbook, but worth an honourable mention, at least.

I am now the very proud owner of Tamasins Kitchen Bible.

I went to my local bankrupt/burned/flooded salvage on Friday and it was amongst the cook books for £11. Such a bargain as I would never have paid £26 for it..... W00t!

Its a really good basic book with loads of traditional recipes and some tasty more challenging ones too.

Did you spend your voucher yet Trashy?

Ooh, lovely. I really do need to get over there.

I bought a pizza, calzone and focaccia book and book called cupcakes galore with all sorts of weird and wonderful cupcake recipes. £5 each in TK Maxx.
