what car to get?

Your missing the point.
The wanker was the one who paid 70k for the prestige of having a poshed up Passat.
The OP will be the one paying 8k for a seriously well built and utterly loaded car, and if you could hear him through the sound proof glass, then it would be him laughing his head off.
;)

bombscare was talking about the 300c not the phaeton

Nice car for the money, and it shouldn't really kill you if you can find an independant BMW specialist.

Talking to a bloke here last week who has a couple of years old 745, and it was in for a service. I asked if he took it to Elms in Cambridge (a main dealer) and he said "You're joking! £110 an hour labour"

Find a good independant and it'll be a steal, that car.

just been out driving an A6

it's ok to drive but Audi are greedy bastards who make everything as an extra. consequently most of the cars out there dont have the gadgets i like.

does a sunroof count as a gadget?

Audi have done a brilliant job building a brand, as have BMW I just don't like any of their cars. People buy the badge and not the car.

Having recently driven a 3 Series, an A4 an A3, a Mondeo and Citroen C5...the Audi's were my least favourite, horrific to drive, bland as hell, shite engines. The Mondeo was a pleasant surprise, the chassis is sublime not quite up to the 3 series but close. But the C5...jesus what a car! I've not a Cit since the days of the old CS but it was brilliant..the handling, the ride all amazing. Engine was a slight let down but I can forgive that. After all I forgave my Alfa 156 which was basically a stunning engine in a great looking car but an absolute dog to own:D

Yeah, but it's French. Wait until it's a couple of years old and bits of bodywork are falling off on a daily basis...

Mind you, if you've had an Alfa, you'll be used to that. ;) :D

We've been talking about getting rid of the troublesome TVR and getting an old Alfa Spider.

We then woke up and thought WTF. We don't even have a garage for it, how long would it last?

Hmm, I sort of know where your coming from.
My A6 is from what I think were some golden years for modern Audi's: '98 - 2004. I really like it. It's a 2.4 V6 quattro & tight as & a beaut to drive. Build quality & interior are superb.
But I had a brand new A4 on hire for a few days recently in Germany and it did feel like standards had slipped a tad. The interior was really plasticy compared & the drive was no great shakes. I put it down to being a rental version, but I've had a peek at the new A6's as well & I'm not that keen either tbh.

picked up my new car yesterday

a merc e280 :)

this just confirms i'm the type of wanker that drives a merc
