What can you tell me about BBC radio 6?

I'm haveing a quick flip though everything at the moment and so far it seems better than xfm. I used to listen to XFM but switched to classic FM when I got sick of the playlist of 10 of the latest tight leg indie songs over and over again.
I know what you mean about xfm, or as I call it, 'mr brightside fm', cos you're guaranteed to hear it played within 20 minutes of switching on your radio.

I like 6music a lot. Ignoring my personal preferences, I guess that I think their remit is to produce intelligent, interesting broadcasting, with an indie/alternative 'bent'. They seem keen to provide a platform for talk-based shows by comedians (Jon Holmes, Jon Richardson, Adam and Joe etc), shows by musicians who have a good knowledge of the genres that they work/have worked in (Dylan, Guy Garvey, Cerys, Lauren Laverne and so on) and finally music journalists who have a different kind of specialist knowledge (Maconie, Lamacq).

There's a few 6music threads on urban which you could use to gen up- for instance, you'll probably get brownie points for knowing that Cerys Matthews has recently landed the weekday afternoon slot, starting in June (Hurrah!)

Good luck!

Lauren Laverne

Aaargh! I can't stand her. She is the biggest name dropper in the universe. She just goes on about who she has met and interviewed without giving any substance to the interview. That merely basking in the presence of such people is enough.

I think 6Music is basically trying to be a BBC Xfm from when Xfm was good. Hence the Xfm DJ's - Adam and Joe and Sean Keavney, the now departed Natasha and the rumoured appearance o brainless idiot Alex Zane.

I think 6Music thinks its as cool as radio one with the intelligence of radio 4. Unfortunately it's neither. It started off promisingly but went rubbish after it lost its head during the phone vote scandal and then aquired the inept Leslie Douglas who took it in an even rubbisher direction (although it did double its tiny audience in that time).

So now it is part muso station (slightly boring record collection one upmanship) and part radio one (dickhead presenter who talks rubbish).

In between the gaps its still good. Personally I like Adam and Joe and Don Letts. I used to listen to Gideon Coe but don't for some reason..

I think you have unrealistic expectations.

Who remembers the very earliest incarnations of XFM? They used to get one-off one month licences, and the music selection was superb. You'd wake up in the morning to the Jesus Lizard or something.

I vaguely remember it. Obscure tracks and true alternative radio. Sadly I only used to get it in brief spells because I didn't live in London and 'twere before the days of online radio.

In fact the only thing I could get in Wiltshire besides the crappy yokel stations was Radio 1 for decent music. I was amazed once when I discovered this new station called Galaxy who had a two hour slot featuring Roni Size and Krust :D

Yes, I seem to remember it being really good and there was some student march that I went to I think??

Yay the students won? But then it was shit.

the breakfast show is better than radio one

have to switch stations the moment george lamb or adam and joe come on

there specialist shows are the nuts dance anthems/Bruce Dickinson rock show/bob dylan theme time

loved the Russel Howard show when he was on. still good now with Jon Richardson

think the original idea for the station was comedy and music hence so many comedians have shows

good luck with the interview!!!!

Hey as radio 6 listeners have you got any ideas for producing engaging and original shows?
I'm thinking more tailor made documentaries and I think I would rather have origin stories (of bands) done like this rather than a straight live interview. The recent Morissey one was good (and I don't care for the Smiths or Moz) but scaled down versions for specialized scenes or bands would appeal to me. I love all that stuff but don't want to listen to bands tell interviewers live on air about their favorite toothpaste.

So like the BBC4 music docs but done for radio? I'd be all for that...Husker Du would be a good start ;)

Yeah, pretty much. I think there is room for some of the more modern bands too. Instead of radio interviews a brief but well laid out doc and session would be cool.
Lighting Bolt would be sweet.

There is a series on 6 called The Record Producers. Don't know if it is home made or a repeat from another BBC station.

I only really listen to Marc Riley. My wife has it on all the time though (unless George Lamb :mad:or Adam & Joe :mad:are on)

I only really listen to Marc Riley.

Marc Riley read out an email mentioning Headbutt the other day and said that they couldn't be a real band as he had never heard of them and they must be made up with a name like that.

Grrrrr. That cancels out playing that cool guitar bit in totally wired. Marc, you are now a normal human being.

i think you're missing the pisstaking which is a big bit of his style. He says shit like that all the time

I used to like Rock Family Trees. I can't remember anything else about it other than the name and the obvious but if you got someone like Mark Lamarr to narrate it, it would be a right winner.
