What can we expect from Copenhagen?

Maybe so, but the Danish police seem pretty restrained in that video. Not nearly as enthusiastic for le baton as other Continental forces. Probably not even as much as the Met have become.

Well from what i have seen i agree - compared to elsewhere, i was more taking issue with the BBC's reporting of it.

The clip seemed fair. It said the protest was peaceful, and was suddenly declared illegal.

So far, it looks like the reading of the riot act was absurd, but the enforcement of the riot act was reasonable.

Well i disagree. So there. :)

Oh and then therer's this just posted

the amount of carbon produced for this talk fest would suck up the credits of 100 small african nations.Waste of time and money(our money)

In that clip, a crowd shouts "5-4-3-2-1-GO!" and charge into a police line. Use of billy clubs follows. Not nice, but what you expect if a crowd imitate the opening of Thunderbirds. The cops look in control, and constantly pull back, including when a person is lying on the floor.

If this is as bad as it gets, the Danish PD are coming out of this OK.

Yeah, of course, you're right. How stupid of me...

According to BBC Tv NEWs delegates were trapped in the conference centre under "lock down" because of the protesters. Gordon Brown had been planning lots of meetings in his hotel to progress a deal and he was unable to get to them.

Way to go protesters, deny meetings to the delegates, that is going to get a deal for sure!

Yes I saw that on newsnight, apparently a lot of NGOs were unable to get into the conference centre. The centre only had a permit for 15,000 people and 45,000 people wanted to get in.

I bet all those people had a hefty carbon footprint getting there!

Apparently there was argument today in the conference centre about which version of pages they were supposed to be negotiating on.

I get the impression that the organisers could have done a better job.

Seems to all be going totally tits up. It's so disappointing that we could end up in a worse place than Kyoto left us. I think the recent resurgence of climate change scepticism is probably to blame.

According to the news on R4 ..

- at the start of the day the talks risk catastrophe
- Gordon Brown playing a leading role (the hero)
- People are arguing for increased international monitoring
- An agreement that limits warming to 2degc will probably not be achieved

Looks like they're going to fail to set any effective targets from what I've been reading this morning. Also, it seems like there's a lot of argument over developed nation contributions to a fund to help the worst hit nations, but it's not clear from what I've read whether that fund is the sort of thing Stern was talking about, ie something that pushes the recepient countries further into debt.

On the last day, the parties are still negotiating, saying that it is very difficult to get an agreement, some have suggested it may have to wait until they meet again. China is apparently against monitoring and the less developed couintries still want a temperature limit of less than 2degC which seems to be the level everybody else is aiming at.

Emerging economies dragging their feet on emissions
Many poorer countries want 1.5 degc most of rest are going for 2 degc
Emissions are increasing by about 3% per year at the moment.
Europe offerred to move from 20 to 30 % emissions reduction conditional on others following
Time is running out.
