What are your musical guilty pleasures?

I honestly think the whole premise of a "guilty pleasure" is a bankrupt and unpleasant one (and that's ASIDE from the evil fucking club night).

right. ok.

Bazza. your thread idea is bankrupt and unpleasant.

apparently.

I'd say they've lasted fairly long actually.

You like Groove Armada? No, you shouldn't feel guilty. Surprised though. :)

At the end of the day, liking music is the main thing, I agree.

I'm with Dub on this one. I know some of the stuff I listen is poppy, chew-and-spit tunes (Mika included), but I *really* feel no need to excuse myself from liking them. I listen to loads of stuff - punk, post-punk, prog, britpop, alt/indie/art rock, various branches of "electronica", industrial, shoegaze, synthpop, pop and so on, and I know I'm bound to step on someone's toes with some of my musical choices, so having guilt based on other people's perception of music would mean I'd have to turn into a indie snob which only listens to music nobody else heard of.

No, i hate Groove Armada. GA = Girls Aloud

I can't believe an innocuous thread with the use of the word 'guilty' has become a subject for such debate.

It's a phrase....I used it. I didn't realise the word guilty would cause so much offence. Who feels guilty when they're listening to music?!?!

I actually lied about Metal Machine. I don't feel guilty when I listen to it but I do get the feeling someone somewhere is laughing at me.

This one is truly a guilty pleasure for me.

and if you're not feeling guilt about what other people thing, the guilt must be self-inflicted, which seems frankly mental.

Dear Self - I like Barbra Streisand.
Dear Self - you shouldn't, it's shit.
Dear Self - well, great, thanks :( - i feel guilty now :(

but bazza, you set the parameters of the thread thus:

Come on, fess up and don't be ashamed.

.....but what music do you like that you really shouldn't (because you normally like other music/it's actually genuinely crap/it could open you up to ridicule).

there's no music i like that i really shoudn't. Normally like other music - well surely variety is a good thing? It's genuinely crap - well, sometimes things can be enjoyably crap. Open you up to ridicule - it's a shame that people give a fuck, to be honest.

You strike me as someone who is going to be gutted when Girls Aloud go their seperate ways later this year.

they've got a new album to record this year, so they better fucking not split. if they do i will hold you personally responsible and when i find you i will rip off your heed. there's always rumours about them due to be splitting though. but yeah it'll happen one day. shame that nadine has split with jesse but at least it means she's not gonna be buggering off to live in the US now, so they can survive a bit longer. oooh roll on next month!! fourth row seats at wembley!! :D

jesus. it's just a bit of lighthearted fun. it's not like Bazza's posted up some racist/sexist (properly unpleasant) thread.... :D

i'll take my own advice - and bugger off to another thread methinks. :)

sorry, but i responded honestly to a thread. Is that not allowed any more? :p

oh, and i never said the thread was unpleasant did i?

OK - I'm leaving my thread now. It's not in the spirit in which I started it and it's more boring than I thought it would be. I thought we'd get more musical contributions and then a bit of chat/banter about posters' selections.

*Storms off in a sulk....puts on Bob Marley's Legend, sings along and cheers up*

Damn you, you got me there.

However, Dub, I will make this observation. You often absolutely slate music you don't like in no uncertain terms. Someone could be on here talking about something they love and you and others will ridicule it. Next time they listen to it, this could leave them feeling with perhaps the same feeling as someone who is susceptible to having a 'guilty' pleasure might.

So you can't have a guilty pleasure but you can make someone feel guilty about their choice in music?

I've never set out to make someone feel guilty about the music they like - it would be a dull music forum if people didn't criticise, but I absolutely don't want to - or believe i should be ABLE to - make anyone feel guilty for liking something. That's just fucking bobbins..

why the fuck should anyone listen to me, anyway? I like what I like, they like what they like - they're allowed to like it and i'm allowed to say it's shit. And vice versa.

Still see no scope for guilt in any of this

So you appreciate that other people like different things from you and the fact that they love something that you loathe is at least admirable because the main thing is the love of music? Simply put, and it's obvious, it's a matter of taste.

Milesy, sorry but I read about it and it's true. You will be seeing one of their last gigs (before the reunion).

You've got to ask yourself if someone reacts like that to soemone slatting music they love whether they should be on the internet at all, the poor sensitive little souls.

I dont have any guilty pleasures, why should I feel guilty about music I like?

'cos it's not considered cool?? :p

Come on folks, don' go, let's get back to talking abnout music which we basically like.....

I trake Dubversion's point about how can you like something and then feel you ought NOT to like it?

Therefore - would anyone like a burn of Barbara Streisan'd album? She does this duet called Enough is Enough, which is really fast and 80s and jolly well makes my feet tap, and I can sing both harmonies, but the absoilute best bit is this guitar twang during the bridge, just to bring the chorus back in, when we were kids we'd dstand there tapping our foots and then all do a massive guitar twang and crease up!

And so I take your point that I should not be ashemed of this, in fact I believe I might play it right now.

But to get back to the point - George Michael rocks - so do groove Armada - not sure abot girls aloud.

Oooh I have a Magic FM CD!!!! Full of easy listenin cringey siongs whichg were spoken about during the pub scene on Human Traffic - Ooooh I'm all alone - cryin on the telephone - I;m 14 years old - no-one loves me etc.

Love it!

where do you read about it, so that i can have a read and judge for myself whether it's true? :) as i said, they are due to record another album together this year - i read about that and it's true, too.

Milesy, I have had a little look myself on the net....I could have fallen for the rumour!!

(See how I avoided giving you the name of a rotten tabloid I may have read!)

DJ Tab on the Mika thread....

lily allen is just another carbuncle on the arse of humanity... Her and her ilk throughout the music industry just aren't worth discussion.

If you're 13 then this sort of sh*te will appeal....

If the general consensus on an artist lead to comments like this, I would suggest that a guilty pleasure is born.
