What are your favourite sports stadiums?

I've only seen the odd shot of that place but I've got to admit that one of the matches I'd most like to see is there watching Boca against River Plate, although I'd be pretty wary of any trouble from what I've heard.

It can get a bit hairy, but as long as you jump when the chants require then you probably won't get killed. ;)

But honestly, best atmosphere I think I've ever seen in a football stadium. The crowds jump up and down for the whole match and you can feel the terraces shaking along.

Yes.

Part time, johnny come latelies with a sudden interest in a team they couldn't be arsed with before.
but if your team got a brand new stadium you'd want higher attendances and new fans, no? more money for the club, better atmosphere, better chance of doing well etc. some of the 'new' fans might actually be people who used to go now and then, but now go regularly or every week. some might be young kids getting into it for the first time. there will undoubtedly be 'new' fans up for something exciting and different or cool, or after a bit of glory or whatever, but at the end of the day if they're football fans and passionate for their team, that's fine with me.

forgot to say i like:

kenilworth road
griffin park
loftus road
the lawn (forest green rovers :D )
the shay - halifax (you've gotta see it to believe it! we had a great time there!)
dulwich hamlet

...just as grounds i've always enjoyed being in.

yeah sorry, i'm lowering the tone a bit :D

For me it's not just about the ground itself but the whole experience of going there, the surrounding area, the transport etc. So by some distance I rate the Bernabeu as my favourite - the stadium' great but I also love the setting and the fact that there's lots of bars just over the road and you can get a drink and hang out in the streets, soaking up the atmosphere. It's also very easy to walk all the way round it... unlike the Nou Camp which takes about an hour to circumnavigate, the area it's in really nondescript, and the ground itself, while impressive, is for me too big and lacks atmosphere (not having a roof doesn't help that). But give me the Nou Camp anyday rather than San Siro, which seemed to me to be in the middle of nowhere and was altogether disappointing.

For the same reasons my fave ground here is Stamford Bridge, even before it was re-developed - good ground, easy to get to, nice location, plenty of bars around. And then Villa Park - Aston may not be a great area, but I like the surrounds with the church and the park (and hey, it's my team!). The ground itself is still good but lacks character these days since they demolished the old Trinity Road Stand.

not my sports, but they look stunning

From the grounds i've been to:

Molineux circa 1987 - 1 stand and 2 grassy mounds and 1 terrace
Camp Nou
San Mames (Bilbao)
Ramón de Carranza (Cadiz)...club singalong "Alcohol, alcohol, alcohol! We came here to get drunk and the result doesn't matter at all!" :D
Vicente Calderon
Villa Park
Azteca

Azteca.

120 000 Pumas vs Scum (América)

40 000 in the away end.

Stupidly steep terraces.

Vertigo really kicking when the concrete startedwobbling up and down like an elastic band.

Fans jumping up and dwon in unison for the entire game.

(but then Pumas fans copy the Boca fans in chats, choerography etc. so its probably a pale version of the bombanera)

Has everyone seen the new Allianz Arena in Munich? The outside can glow red & blue!

I think the idea is that it'll glow the colours of whatever team's playing there. I was just checking it out as I've got a ticket for Brasil v Australia :)

I went to see AFC Wimbledon a few weeks ago and was very impressed with that.

In terms of massive ones though, the MCG on boxing day really does take some beating. And it's dead cheap (or at least, it was in 94/95) because there are so many tickets to get rid of.

San Siro also takes some beating. The Nou Camp is an amazing piece of architecture, but loses a lot of atmosphere because it hasn't got a roof. And the away fans are perched at the top (not that many seem to travel in Spain though).

The Ajax Arena is fantastic. I like the 'moat' around the pitch.

I'm afriad I don't like the Madjeski. It felt very sterile and has got a 'band stand' (?!).

And Wycombe's ground's location is abysmal. On a bloody industrial estate.

I like Brentford though. Last time I went some home fans were in the rain whilst we were in a covered end :) How can they let that happen? I think it's changed now.

Lords is nice, but suffers from not having been built in one go. Like a Subbuteo fan who can only afford to buy a chunk of stadium every 3 months... who eventually cheats by sticking a piece of the Millennium Falcon on one end and calls it the 'press box'.

What about shit stadiums?

I think Priestfield in Gillingham is one of the worst I've been to.

Priestfield was an absolute tip the first time I went there in about 1996. They had a stand there which had been erected in the 19th century.

Kenilworth Road, Bescot Stadium, Glanford Park, Nene Park, Layer Road and Roots Hall are all particular bugbears of mine.

Sadly the age of grounds so bad they were good is passing into history :(

If you look really hard, there's a pair of Sunderland fans in the garden behind the Bristol End, haven't been able to escape since viewing a game from there in 1992...

Oh and the legend 'BARNET FC' is still painted along the back of the Pop Side :D

Welcome to the boards mate :)

That pic is taken against us isn't it?

Carlisle I think - (edit) it's between 94 and 96 because i'm pretty sure that's andy barlow at left back. With all respect to the Gas, they're is a big crowd in the kop, that's the away end and it only filled for Burnley, Carlise and Preston normally.

Looked like quarters to me :(

Brought back happy memories of the Rovers packing out the Bloofield Road Kop and strippers in Gas tops in the Manchester... :D

Oh, I hope my edit hasn't offended....... :(

Could be Rovers, don't remember you filling the Kop round that time you see.....

I can assure you we've filled the Kop and our part of the East Enclosure several times.

Most memorably in May 1990 when Blackpool were already relegated and we won 3-0 to seal the Third Division title. We had about 5000 there that day and the home support must have been not much more than 1000.

From about 1998 - 2000 we were there every April and always took 3000+ up there, it became a proper tradition to invade Blackpool in the spring, fancy dress, inflatables, pitch invasions and all :D Rumour was that Blackpool used to ask the league for us at home around that time because we always brought so many.

"We won the League, beside the sea, we won the League beside the sea! We won the League beside the seaside! We won the League beside the sea!"

Looking at the pic, it prolly is Carlisle though

In my opinion....

Best stadium has to be Benfica's new Stadium of Light for design. Millenium Stadium for location, Any number of new German grounds for terraces, Goodison Park for history, Highbury for architecture, Ninian Park for atmosphere, Nou camp for it's aura.

Worst stadiums: Any identikit, out of town, sponsored name, poor public transport linked, all-seater expensive hell hole devoid of culture and tradition with draconian stewards. Britannia Stadium & Darlingtons new ground springs to mind, although many are guilty of one or many of the above crimes.

Is that Twerton PArk, Bath City's ground..??

Yep.

The terrace opposite is the Popular Side, the road behind is the aptly named Freeview Road.

The Pop Side is where I learned to swear, sing, laugh, love, cry and get extremely bored :D

Those were the days
