whaddaya growing? (PICS!!!)

Fine IME :)

I've done basil thyme oregano parsley coriander fennel and sage off the top of my head from seed no problems. I think I used a 50:50 potting compost/sand mix for them as they tend not to like having very wet roots. Just plant and let them get on with it.

Rosemary I've never tried from seed, nor bay, got little plants for those and grown them up. Got a 'kitchen bay' plant for about £1 from Sainsburys or similar about 8 years ago - it had about 5 or 6 leaves on it, I think you were supposed to use them up and then bin it - I planted it in a big pot and resisted the temptation to pluck any for the first year, now it's 5 foot tall and 3 foot wide and has has supplied all my bay needs ever since.

I
Might give it a go with thyme, sage and chives then - and get myself a little rosemary plant/bush from somewhere :)

All the thyme and sage I've had in the past has just died off and cuttings I've taken from huge rosemary bushes never work  might have to read up a bit more about how I'm treating them and where they're placed in the garden/roof.

I want a little bay tree now as well :o:D

Here is the raised bed I built at the weekend:

My first garden, and I'm growing

Sweet peas (I think :hmm:)
Gladioli
Aquilegia
Dahlia
Basil
Mint
A load of tiny seedlings, which I think include cosmos, asters, cornflowers, alliums and maybe some other stuff.

Does anyone know if I can plant a clematis, which is in flower now, without killing it?

Pip you're growing on a balcony right? Its going to be gloriously colourful!

Will you grow a few more herbs? I have some seeds left over if you'd like?

You can plant a clematis now. You can even do it in a container.
Wherever you plant it, try burying the crown of the plant 3 inches beneath the soil (ie deeper than the pots they come in.)
It encourages more stems to grow. Plus, Ive never had clematis wilt, but this method of planting helps the plant come back from it the following year.

Also keep the roots cool, a roof slate shading the roots would be perfect.

Yeah, it's a balcony, and I've got loads of drainpipe space waiting for herbs as soon as I see some decent ones in the garden centre. I want thyme, oregano, tarragon, sage and rosemary  err, tell me how to get the seeds and I'll send you some :)
I'm also going to plant some hanging baskets with god knows what in them.

Our balcony garden this morning:

Peas, beans, peppers and tomato (thank you kitty kitty)

Herbs: the coriander is going mental, which is a shame because I don't like coriander

Chillis and little tomatoes

Strawberries (and courgette in the background):

Its the first time I've had my own garden really and its a steep learning curve, fun though.

This year I am growing purple sprouting broccoli, sprouts, onions, shallots, lettuce, beetroot, strawberrys, redcurrants, blackcurrants, 2 types of potato and 3 types of toms, well I will be if the slugs don't demolish the lot :(

I'm looking forward to getting up the plot again when this crap weather passes... the rain is gonna be doing it a world of good

I went up the other day and it's all kicking off...
Garlic, onions and shallots are massive,
peas and beans are doing well,
spuds (4 types) were all up apart from pink fir apples,
carrots and asparagus are up as are lots of lettuce, radishes, and spring onions.
strawberries are covered in flowers and there are loads of fruit formed on the red and black currants,
I sowed some swede, kohl rabbi, beetroot and spinach which should be making an appearance by now.

We've got loads of stuff waiting in greenhouses and hardening off to go in when we get the chance... lots of cabbages, purple sprouting, corn, more beans, squashes, celeriac, parsnips, leeks etc :)

An update:

Have had quite a bit of spinach and lettuce out of there already. And several very tasty radishes

:D

my radishes are doing ok :)
my strawberries have been eaten by me, as have the peas.

my cabbages are being decimated by caterpillars (there's thirteen of 'em on one leaf atm) - halp! i'm too much of a wuss to pick 'em up and chuck 'em - anyone got any other solutions? :(

My dahlia flowered, which filled me with joy, and I've got a tiny pea pod on what's meant to be an ornamental sweet pea but probably isn't.
Apart from those, nothing is flowering
Pics tomorrow :)

The mutt ate my aubergine and pepper plants:mad:

Beans and tomatoes doing well got some fruits on the tomatoes now, purple sprouting brocolli is looking ok ( just hoping for the best with them) and gonna sow some lettuce when I can work out how to keep the mutt away from the stuff when its first growing:(

courgettes are almost ready to pick I think, maybe another week before the first will be large enough:)

So much lettuce. Bored of lettuce now. Friends and family bored of lettuce. Anyone want some lettuce?

i forgot to plant mine :o
my cabbage plants now have one leaf between them... bah!
radishes are doing scarily well though. swap you some radishes for some lettuce, hiccup :hmm:

Courgettes doing well, tomatoes starting to fruit nicely, lettuce erupting all over the place and harvested these first chillis of the season:
