Only just got round to this - my 'autumn' raspberries, been getting fruit for two weeks...

My little veg patch - courgettes and runner beans going great guns, another little project of mine in front:p

and a typical evenings haul at the moment - beans are only just coming on stream, like to pick them small and cook them whole, served with butter. The purple veined leaf is beetroot, I now mainly grow it as a salad, and if I get a beet in the autumn, its a bonus

Getting less 'cut and come again' stuff now as the bugs are on the up in the warmer weather.

I believe that runners and courgettes do not need rotation, and both are very productive - ideal for a small plot.

cheers

it's so great that it needs resurrecting :) (i'm not taking time to see if any new 'whats growing' threads have been started cos i need to rush out soon... :o)

pics to follow, now i've been lent a cameraphone :)

got:
carrots
garlic
onion
rosemary
strawberries
a blackcurrant tree/bush thingy

and something else i've forgotten :o

Oooh lovely thread tufty! A week by week task list to what we should be preparing / planting would be useful.

I've got 60 seedling chillis and just sown lettuce, radish, peas, carrots, leeks, spinach, chives, basil and coriander.

Nothing to see yet, but this year we planted:

carrots
spring onions
spinach
various other salad leaves (it was a mixed packet)
garlic
tomatoes
potatoes
basil
rosemary

will plant wild rocket in April

I didn't treat the soil or anything and I'm not feeding the soil, just interested to see what growns and what doesn't...

If anyone fancies giving me some strawberry shoots/seeds I'll be most pleased :D

Tomatoes
courgettes
squash
watermelons
radishes
lettuces
fennel

... but nothing's germinating yet

And yes, some of them are yours, Tufty, when they do :) Cleared your balcony yet...?

We're just coming to the end of our leeks and sprouts.

Got lots of onions and garlic up, and some shallots just starting to sprout.

Have planted some beans, peas and asparagus (although that won't be ready to harvest for a few years!)

Got loads of seeds on the go, but nothing germinated yet, and a windows sill full of chitting spuds.

Isn't it a bit too early to plant carrots? Or are people growing them under cloches?

toms have germinated, waiting for peppers and chillis to do the same
i have planted some broadbeans which have just started to germinate and planted some plants i bought for an early crop.
also just planted some pak choi, rapini and mustard greens as a bit of an experiment - usually they're planted late summer because they bolt in the heat so i'm trying to see if i can also get an early crop.

Just started the allotment at the weekend, so two raised wooden beds with spuds so far and two more beds to go down there at the weekend.

Planted some carrots, beetroots and tomatoes for the garden in peat-pots and have had some chillis going for a few weeks now on the window sill. :)

SEED SWAP:

I have some mixed lettuce seeds, as there are 750 in a packet and I have plenty to spare.

Any corriander, parsley, basil or other summer herbs wanting to do a swap?

Any chance this thread can be moved to the Garden Shed mods? Its a bugger to find!

So all you gardening lot... how do herbs do from seed? Or is it usually more successful to get a cutting or small plant?

I just started some seeds today, we are having a late spring, can't wait to see things sprout, love your pics, even the ones from years past!

Fine IME :)

I've done basil thyme oregano parsley coriander fennel and sage off the top of my head from seed no problems. I think I used a 50:50 potting compost/sand mix for them as they tend not to like having very wet roots. Just plant and let them get on with it.

Rosemary I've never tried from seed, nor bay, got little plants for those and grown them up. Got a 'kitchen bay' plant for about £1 from Sainsburys or similar about 8 years ago - it had about 5 or 6 leaves on it, I think you were supposed to use them up and then bin it - I planted it in a big pot and resisted the temptation to pluck any for the first year, now it's 5 foot tall and 3 foot wide and has has supplied all my bay needs ever since.
