Westfield being credit crunched.

I'll break with the commonly-held beliefs and say it'll be a good success. Once this current mess is over with, obviously. I know a number of people who like to shop there because it's not Oxford St. There's space, you're not crushed by people, you can take a breather, the food's generally better. So far as shopping malls go (quite a caveat), it's rather pleasant. There's a lot of Hatorade being drunk when it's just a bloody shopping mall.

Of course I wouldn't pay their parking prices - I'd never drive there in the first place.

I find it confusing how the people who desgined Westfield car park seem to have been completely unaware of the existance of two wheeled vehicles.

Still at least it means it's free.

From the Evening Standard link in the OP:

At Amanda Wakeley, the British designer who specialises in silk ball gowns and evening wear, the sales team admit that they have not sold a single item in six days (including, quite incredibly, a Saturday). "The last item we sold was a skirt for £260 last Wednesday," the store assistant says. "We've had customers come in and try stuff on but, unlike our stores in Knightsbridge, which are doing well, people who come to Westfield aren't prepared to spend £2,500 on a dress."

Well quite. What were they expecting? If (a big if :D) I had that kind of money to spend I wouldn't want to trek out to Shepherds Bush to do it.

When the Credit Crunch ends I wonder what excuse people will have use when things screw-up because they didn't do their demographics research...

Well part of me thinks it's entirely their fault....they have a store in Knightsbridge and another in Westfield....if the other was in Bluewater then it would make sense. But instead they got greedy and now they're paying for it.

I don't think a store at Bluewater would fare much better in the current climate tbh. The only places a shop selling £2500 dresses will do OK at the moment are places like Knightsbridge, New Bond Street, South Kensington, and, possibly, Belgravia. But Bluewater or Westfield, nah.

"It's better than Oxford Street" is like saying that punching yourself in the face is good, because it hurts less than hitting your head with a hammer.

Any London dweller who thinks the Westfield is good should move to Birmingham. They have an excellent range of shopping centres, 6 lane expressways, and healthy competition amongst the numerous multi-storey car parks.

lets start a thread based on an evening standard article because we know that they are such a reliable source ;)

I'm not a fussy shopper so for me, Westfield has everything I will ever need for clothes and presents. Oxford Street can kiss my butt, Westfield is less crowded and therefore less annoying/stressful.

Well, anything is better than Oxford Street - I only ever go down there occassionally for the John Lewis, Debenhams or House of Fraser, but otherwise avoid like the plague.

heres my handy hint for visiting Westfield. If you find yourself being dragged round the peoned throngs - as I did this Xmas as the gf wanted to shop and obv. we were in the area, the book shop inside is an oasis of calm, positively ignored by the lumbering herd.
Of course the defectors is better, but I was only allowed there by being on best behaviour, whichbasically meant carrying, agreeing, paying, not moaning or stabbing strangers in the face.

7pm, with restaurants maybe longer

I really wouldn't though, unless you're looking for some sort of crowd phobia shock therapy.

Is it that busy. It was pleasantly roomy when I last went. It can't be worse than oxford street which is my other option.

I hate shopping either way but I HAVE to get a dress for a couple of weddings.

Will the shops be open til 7?

Was thinking I wouldn't have time and should just suffer OS.

Either way I should shift my arse off here.

OS means less time on the stuffy tube.

Dilemas, eh? It's hard being a woman, fridgey. :(

What sort of body type are you, Fridgey? Spangles might have some tips on what dresses would suit you this summer.

Is it a pub near Westfield? i might play spot the fridgey.

Not very near I'm afraid - I don't know any with beer gardens around there. The Defectors Weld has a little outdoor bit but it's not much of a garden. Anyway it's a bit of a walk and I'm lazy.

I might try something a bit more floral this summer, but I think I should stick to V-necks.
