west coast gangsta shit.....

I fucking hate that west coast gansta whine sample that Dr Dre seems to love using so much in recent years...I think the first track it ever apeared in is Dopeman.

I don't like any Dre solo stuff, World Class Wreckin Cru, NWA, etc is amazing, the first ever music I got into, but I hate his modern production style

Haha... is "recent years" in this context like, the last 15 years or so?

He's got well over that whiney g-funk moog (?) sound now... did ages ago. He's made a load of really good beats over the last 10 years or so... offhand, famous ones "in da club", "my name is", mary j blige's "family affair" etc. etc. etc.

Did you not like Dopeman then?

(I kinda hated that g-funk shit for a long time, but can deal with some of it now)

Yeah man, I mean in the last 15 years....

I fucking love Dopeman, prefer the original one on NWA And The Posse to the remix on Straight out of compton.

Dopeman was just Eazy E reading lyrics off a sheet of paper in the studio - cos he was so bad at rapping, Ice Cube wrote the lyrics

Still a classic though :)

Some of the best moog g-funk stuff was on Eazy's Dre dissing 187Um Drekilla album, had some nice production for that time.

If you haven't listened to Efil4zaggin lately go back and check Dayz Of Wayback, I still love that track today, always felt MC Ren's flow on that one.

I always thought (and still do) that Eazy-E sounds like he is 12 years old.. :D

Iam said:
I so nearly like Jedi Mind Tricks, but there's something about Vinnie Paz's delivery that just gets up my nose.

Ho humm.

Thought the same about Vinnie Paz until I heard him on a 7L/Eso track which he tore to shreds.. errr, 'Stand Up' I think.. kinda old now

Really not into West Coast, Eazy was always shite imo.. each to their own and all that though.

*Edit ---- and something about the name, Vinnie Paz... man sounds fucking BAD

Iam said:
Not really gangsta particularly, but some west coast acts I like are...

Aceyalone in particular (although there's a substantial drop-off in his recent stuff, imo) and the Freestyle Fellowship in general.
Quannum/Blackalicious/Lyrics Born/Latyrx
Del The Funkee Homosapien
Souls of Mischief

:)

all of them are fucking great , and whats even better is they don't have the macho gangster bullshit going on

Innit.

Mind you, his aka is Ikon the Verbal Hologram, which I'm not sure is much better.

Don't get me wrong, every now and again, he's blazing (I Against I, with Planet Asia, for instance). I just can't really handle him over the course of a whole album.

Re. the 2 Live Crew, Brother Marquis and Luke Skyywalker were from Miami but only joined the group after Fresh Kid Ice and Mr Mixx dropped another member and left California, although Ice was himself born in Trinidad & Tobago. So basically they were from all over the place but their sound is inextricably linked to the Miami bass sound.

And speaking of Booty Bass, I've only heard one song by him but Sir Mix A Lot (from Seattle) has to be recommended just for "Baby Got Back".

see, i like that moog sound that was on snoop dogg's first album and that ice cube was so into

there was total overkill, but it's a fucking lush sound

it is pretty amazing that dre has been involved in all the best bands, i have listened to a lot of the recomendations, and if they aren't involved with dre, they just arent as good

fuck, he started NWA (launching ice cube eand eazy e) snoop dogg, tupac....

plus his own stuff

it's almost enough to forgive him warren g

there's plenty of good west coast g shit besides dre, although most of it is pretty difficult to buy in the uk.

if you're looking for that lush g-funk sound, the best producers other than Dre are DJ Quik (check his first 3 solo records, plus the Penthouse Players Clique, 2nd II None, & Suga Free records), Above the Law (everything they did up to Time Will Reveal), Prodeje (the Havoc & Prodeje records, the first 2 South Central Cartel albums, Murder Squad Nationwide), Warren G (yeah he's a shitty rapper, but G-funk era is a production classic, and check the records he produced for the Twinz & the Doveshack), Daz (the Dogg Pound record & his first Solo). Other notable producers include Hi-C, DJ Battlecat, Tracy Kendrick, WC... many more.

also, don't sleep on Northern Cali (the Bay plus Sacramento/the Valley). a very different sound (much "bouncier" and more electronic) but in terms of number of artists and classic albums No Cal shits on So Cal IMO. it's a shame that most people are only familiar w/ digital underground & the luniz, and that solesides/quannum, hieroglyphics, and hobo junction are much better known in the UK than say, 11-5, RBL Posse, or Cold World Hustlers.

finally, people have been mentioning southern artists like geto boys, ugk, slim thug (who's more new school). a lot of laid back smooth g-shit made in the south back in the early 90s. check out early 90s Rap-a-lot, Suave House, Big Tyme, Cash Money, MOBO, Big Boy releases.

Something about gangsta rap brings out my proselytising fervour, so I'ma up some laid back smooth Bay Area shit.

First up, Young D Boyz - Selling Cocaine As Usual (Radio Version) '94
http://s10.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=0ZWSA2HR90TMZ2APE9SR93DYKY

from Richmond (East bay town north west of Oakland), produced by Khayree, one of the greatest Bay Area producers of all time. this is the most beautiful song dedicated to selling cocaine I've ever heard. nice melancholy strings & flutes, great understated raps.

Ray Luv - Luv From A G '95
http://s21.yousendit.com/d.aspx?id=02BDPR2VMV8H51O5TSTMFZNDWC

more Khayree production. this is more typical of his style than the yound d boyz track. sinister super heavy bass line & lots of slap-funk bass and wah wah guitar. Ray Luv is a Crestside, Vallejo legend. 2 great verses, first a letter from an OG in prison to a YG on the oustide, then the reply. Comparable w/ Nas - One Love not just in content but quality.
