Wes Anderson

You could say the same thing about the much admired Eric Rohmer, who is probably more similar to Stillman than Wes Anderson. I don't think Stillman makes the same film over and over, he just knows what he's good at and unlike with most of Wes Anderson's stuff he writes believable characters and there is a sense of dramatic development in his films.

I agree with your insinuation that Stillman's movies are better written.

Also, they're not just believable in the general sense - I'm sure I've actually met some of those people. Metropolitan and Last Days of Disco are SO authentically WASP-y, wealthy, private school, Ivy League, etc etc NYC.

I remember liking Barcelona too, though it's really been ages since I've seen that one.

What was that Josh Hamilton one...? I don't think it's Stillman, but I think Chris Eigeman might be in it too...

Sorry to revive an old thread, it is very funny though

I just went through all of the Wes Anderson films that I haven't seen over the past couple of days. I read this and had a lot of those prejudices against him that Revol68 had at the time how it's all just these soulless rich kids living in a cartoon, but I really enjoyed them this time around. That is the whole point of it is that they are nauseating and you identify with them. It does turn you off at first how 'cool' everything is, but once you get into the groove of it they are usually pretty heartbreaking films where the end is just some bullshit and you know that the characters haven't really grown. There is something of the Nathan Barley show in it, everyone is oblivious and trapped. They are also beautiful, the cinematography and the actors and everything.

I haven't watched Isle of Dogs yet, I'm about to get high and watch that, but I've seen all of the other ones, Budapest Hotel is probably my favourite, I like how he gets sillier as he goes along.

Here Reno , whatever happened to Whit Stillman? I had forgotten him until I reread this thread.
He's still working but there always have been long gaps between each project. A few years ago he made the well received Jane Austen movie Love & Friendship and he spent a few years of turning Cosmopolitan into a tv series for Amazon, which eventually stalled due to creative differences. I think the pilot is on Amazon Prime.
