Werner Herzog appriciation thread

i missed the beginning of aguirre wrath of god (because i was watching jay rayner talk about cheap pies :o), so will have to borrow a dvd. i love werner herzog; my best fiend is one of my favourite documentaries. i also like the bit in grizzly man where he's listening to the tape of timothy being eaten and then takes the headphones off and looks at the woman and says 'you must never, ever listen to this tape'. i shouldnt be funny, but it really is.

Another great thing about Werner Herzog is his use of sound, and music, in his films. I can think of few directors who use it so effectively.

Another example is another one of his documentaries, Encounters at the End of the World (which I admit I have *still* not seen fully), but as he travels to antarctica, he seems more interested in the kinds of people who end up on a research base like that.

So good

Aguirre, Wrath of God was on tonight.

And Fitzcarraldo is on BBC4 on Wednesday.

I cant remember which one you downloaded (if any). But it is better to watch it on TV. Even better in a cinema.

Who's seen that vid where he got shot with an airgun? Harsh!

I need to check out a few of his things.

i found a bunch of his films (9 or so) on dvd for about 20p all in, think i even mentioned it on here. Only watched one so far :o

As many have said, even when he misses it's interesting to see how he misses, always the sign of a good director I reckon.

Fitzcarraldo is one of my favourite films, partly due to it's overall insanity (both in the story and the actual film), but he's got a certain touch...

You really should watch the doc Little Dieter Needs To Fly that this is based on. It's infinitely superior to Rescue Dawn with its infuriatingly Hollywood Star Wars ending

wtf was that ending all about? he gets encircled by a load of black blokes dressed up in different coloured lycra body suits. thats not how i remember Nam

I've downloaded Fitzcarraldo, haven't watched it yet though.

I stayed at the house which they used when filming Fitzcarraldo, its still called La Casa Fitzcarraldo. I stayed in Jaggers room.

Havent seen the film though, I reckon I'd struggle with it :hmm:

i loved Grizzly Man, anyone see it?

Herzog's narration was almost as bonkers as Timothy Treadwell's...well, everything.

i know it's really tragic but there are some brilliant bits.

'i dizagree vith Timosee. I see only ze cruelty of Nyuuuuerture'

I saw it.

You know, I didn't think Timothy Treadwell was really that bonkers.

I love Herzog's films, my favourites would be 'Aguirre', 'Fitzcarraldo' and 'Enigma of Kasper Hauser'. The only poor one was 'Scream of Stone'.

I can't remember many shouting at the screen moments watching films, usually reserve that behaviour for TV.

Timothy Treadwell though:mad:

Stupid fucking idiot cunt:mad::mad:

And his friend. Herzog should have made her listen to the tape so I could laugh at her, stupid fuck.

Why is Timothy Treadwell a stupid fucking idiot cunt?

He lived with bears for years and years without a single incident.

It was luck that he lasted that long.

All well and good putting himself at risk but he shouldn't have taken someone else with him to put their life in danger.
