We too are atheists and want nowt to do with a church, but we still thought you had to do the actual legal getting married indoors?

Yeah, not neccessarily indoors but in a permanent structure. We got married in a hotel garden on the decking outside a small summer house so we were outside but on the structure. That was legal.
