Welcome to Lambeth - Seriously

why do they need to advertise n spend money? Wouldn't be better to spend the money on making services BETTER than giving em to some ad company?

No, serioulsy

Well I liked the posters. I also like the fact they are trying to communicate with people in a way that may be taken notice of.

I think this really shows a sense of realism - we all know there have been, and in some areas, continue to be, real problems. But self realisation is definitely an essential part of the healing process.

And as for complaining about putting up public information and notice boards, etc, I see the council are fighting a pointless battle then - damned if they do, damned if they don't.

I've only lived in Lambeth for five years, but I think it's OK, and I think it's getting better!

In fact maybe we could display all our subverts in the Brixton co-op art space?

No, seriously.

And get the SLP to do a photo story.

Welcome to the boards Humpstone.
I take it you're not a council tenant then? Because if you were, you might well be complaining about Lambeths' attempt at totally one-way communication, if they'd recently moved your local neighbourhood office to the other side of town.
Perhaps if you'd lived here a little longer, you also might well be offended and appalled at money spent on publicity that basically says your home is a shit hole.

Thanks for the welcome.
You're right; I'm not a council tenant. I pay shit loads for where I live. I don't have the security of a council tenancy, subsidised rent or repair service and I need a letter from god to make contact with my landlord.

I do see that the estate I live on the edge of is well maintained, quickly and frequently cleared of the rubbish the people who live think it's OK just to dump in the communal gardens.

My rubbish is always collected - as is my recycling, the streets are clean and well lit and there's a big new shiny school not far away.

As for the advertising, I think it's ironic not insulting. I like the fact they seem to be acknowledging the past. Nothing is ever as good as it could be, but it's good to see them trying to communicate without the tired worthiness so much stuff from the council is bound up in. But I get the feeling that around here the poor bastards are on a hiding to nothing!

Oh, and I thought their promotion of same sex registrations was really good, but I'm sure all the style gurus round here will find something to object about it!!

If you're not a troll, you're (seriously) the first person I've ever come across who respects Lambeth council. Amazing. They are the worst bunch of incompetent fools I've ever had to deal with, and I don't even have council housing to cope with.

Incompetent fools is being very nice...just read Rotten Boroughs every week in Private Eye - Lambeth makes it at least once a month, usually for mind-boggling stupid decisions that mean we end up paying shed loads.

although I did find the radiator scam of a few weeks back pretty amusing. Seriously.

The new posters are almost more offensive than the original ones - pure advertising about how great the council is without even bothering to hide behind 'civic renewal'.

I finally got a reply from Lambeth after my complaint about the posters being patronising, offensive, and a waste of money. This is what they said:

Dear,

my sincere apologies for the delay in replying to your email. This was caused by the automated system that controls and processes messages on our Revitalise email account. This problem has now been rectified.

To deal with the basis of your message, firstly my I apologies if you found the campaign in any way offensive - this was never the intention of the campaign.

The campaign messages are intended to acknowledge the fact that the council has had problems relating to poor performance and reputation. However, the 'Welcome to Lambeth. No, seriously' is intended to convey our conviction that Lambeth is a great place to live work and visit. We are literally serious about saying welcome to Lambeth, acknowledging the past and keen for perception to catch up with reality.

Times have changed in Lambeth. Our performance as a council continues to improve. Our latest Comprehensive Performance Assessment (Lambeth CPA) highlights these improvements, as does the results of our latest survey of Lambeth residents. Our purpose and intention is to deliver continually improving services to our service users and customers. We still have a way to go to achieve our goal of being one of the best councils in London, but we are committed to the journey.

The council has also turned around its financial position. This has now allowed us to plan for the future with the commitment and resources to deliver.

This is what Revitalise is. Our 15-year regeneration programme designed to deliver improvements to services and facilities across the borough, as well as stimulate other, new investment in to the area.

However, before we can deliver anything we need the input and ideas of those that will be affected and involved. There are many ways we go about this, and the Revitalise outdoor media campaign is one of them. Through the Revitalise marketing campaign we have made contact with thousands of people and organisations.

The Revitalise campaign is being very effective in getting the message about this long-term programme out to people. Again, I am sorry if you were offended. However, as an experienced teacher you will appreciate that a range of communication tools are necessary to convey a message and connect to a mass audience, and this is just one of ours - which many others have found engaging.

If you would like to talk in person about this or any other aspect of the Revitalise programme I would be glad to hear from you.

May I wish you a happy Christmas and peaceful new year.

Regards

Bill Walshe

Ring him and point out why the posters are so obviously shit.

And then charge him two hundred pounds an hour or whatever they pay the idiots who come up with this sort of stuff.

apparently the number of responses that the revitalise questionairre posted out to all brixton residents was in single figures.

If there are enough comments on the blog I'll email them to the council after a month or so.

Its worrying if so few people replied - the document makes loads of the consultation process.

Edit: actually i'll start a new thread.

What questionnaire? I never got one.

I think the full thing only went out to people on the Brixton Forum's mailing list, and anyone who had registered with the Revitalise website, but there should also have been copies in the Library

(It would be nice to hope that somebody in Lambeth might also have had the nous to put some in the Rec - were any sighted there  )

I registered with the Revitalise website and I got sent a very nice glossy brochure about it - think I still have it somewhere, but I don't recall a questionnaire....

I think I saw one of those horrird little posters at Clapham North Tube Station. I had to check myself. What do they mean by "seriously"?

"...it ain't that bad..."
"...you might as well sell your ticket to a hobo..."
"..well at least you can get your crack really cheaply.."

It's one of my new years resolutions, to not let Lambeth wind me up so much.
I think it's going to be easier quitting smoking though, 'cos it's taking them two months to repair my broken hot tap in my kitchen, and I've been waiting five weeks for more recycling bags....

You can get recycling bags from the library. They're at the front desk on the ground floor. Give 'em your name and address and they'll give you a roll of them.
