Week's food budget for a couple in London?

That's fuck all! I spend more than that a month on lunch alone :D
Well, I earn fuck all! (well I used to, just got a new job, but not really adjusted to more money yet!). Still eat pretty well (ish). I only buy my lunch about once every couple of months, when I forget to make something. Usually have left over dinner from the night before, or a bit of salad. Make most meals from scratch, and usually massive ones, like lasagne, casserole, moussakka - then freeze most of it for lazy days :)

chris, surely you can work this out for yourself?

think about how much you spend on eating out now

estimate much you spend on your work lunches a month now (you have already answered that one, so there's a head start...)

then roughly find a medium of what you would like to spend on your household shop each month, not including booze. £300? £400? less?

then factor in some booze.

then add together

bingo! :)

We spend between £45 and £70 a week on the big shop, and try really hard to take something from home for our lunch, then there's just bits and bobs like bread and milk left over the buy during the week. In a normal week probably no more than £70. But at the moment we don't have any kitchen so I am actually spending £25 a week on food from M&S and then about £10 a day on food. Also, our food bill went up after I got pregnant because I never used to eat snacks between meals before - probably about £85 a week at the moment. Compared to you lot I've just realised how much we don't spend on food for 2 people but we do tend to make things from scratch and don't buy 'luxury' items, I'm quite good at being poor and can't wait until I go on Maternity Leave so I can avoid supermarkets altogether by shopping daily and bake bread and things.

if you're picking it up on a day to day basis then you're tempted to pick up a load of random other stuff more often. Well, I am.
:D

Welcome to my exciting but surprisingly cash-poor-food-rich life :)

We spend about £45 per week on a big shop, £10 at the veg shop, and £20 or so topping up at the sainsbury's local. Plus, we usually go out once a week, which is about £30 - 40 for two, so about £115 for two, I'd say.

god knows. we occaisionally do a big shop which lasts about 2 weeks. maybe spend 70 on that. but add lunch, eating out, miscellaneous shopping and the likes, well, i've no idea!

It's not fucking stupid
well, in defence of the one with melton mowbray eyes, it is a teensy bit stupid.

afterall, isnt a budget about how much you want to spend? so its a simple case of setting yourself a budget and spending it. no?

Doesn't mean I can't ask what other people budget for their food though!

of course not dear :)

just sounded a bit like you were asking others what your budget should be ;)

I think Master Filter has a perfectly reasonable question. ;)

The amount people spend varies so widely in London. I'm sure some people still survive quite comfortably on less than a fiver a day and would be suprised if there weren't thousands living on a lot less. :(

As for PieEye, probably the Glastonbury Comedown :D

I reckon we spend about £50 a week for the both of us. Eating out is a complete rarity and if we get in a takeaway it's usually because we haven't been shopping.

I suspect not, PieEye herself is more likely to bash me. She's got mad ninja skills.

you knows  !

I spend about £30 on the 2 of us and £20 on myself. Dub spends about a quid in total.

What a soulless gastronic existence :(

I could spend that in a day.. as evidenced by my chubby round cheeks.

I feel bad now, having indulged in a variety of foodstuffs Chez Dubface. That tapenade was half your food budget!

i do a big shop every 2 weeks or so, which normally costs £60 ish, then about another £30 on takeaways, snacks etc. then another £20 on beer. so £170a month for me and 4 little people. if mr feyr is here, it would be around £200a month

I don't know why it's so cheap - I guess I am a bit of a skinflint when it comes to food. We never eat out and get takeaway about once every 3-4 weeks.

I don't eat badly but I think perhaps I don't eat sumptuously. I'm quite happy with it though :)

We must be gluttons, can easily spend £100 at Sainsburies and it only last 5 days. This does include cat food and litter for a month, though.

When I and my wife lived in Surrey, excluding eating out etc we would expect to spend at least £100. Eating out two or three times a month would easily cost an extra £150 to £200 as long as we didn't go daft.

Trying to do a budget.. how much do people allow for food for a week, for a couple? I reckon including take-aways, meals out, and work lunches. A nice standard of eating.

Cheers :)

I reckon about a £10-£15 per dinner per person.
£5 for lunch and a small amount for breakfast.
So £210-£280 plus breakfast.
But that's 'nice'. You can do it on about £10 each per week.
