Wedding Rings..

Where to get one?

We wanted to get rings using thames wood from Stephen Einhorn - but gaijinboy went there today and they said they didn't recommend you wear them in the shower/pool etc etc and various other limitations. Since we're both quite into swimming and stuff like that, we're thinking maybe just a plain band.

So - a plain band - you'd just get them anywhere right?

You can get plain wedding bands just about anywhere, but in some cases, you'll need to have them specially made. e.g.Finger sizes might be outside the standard range, or you might not be able to find anything in the right size & width that's a metal you can wear.

There's plain and there's plain - you still have a choice of width (if you want the rings to wear well, go as wide as you can afford) and whether the edges are curved, angled or cut straight across. You also need to decide whether you want to have a "his n hers" set, where the bride's ring is a bit narrower but the same style), or whether you want both rings to be the same width & style but different sizes.

Seeing as the rings are going to get a lot of exposure to water, you need something without plating (white gold is often finished with rhodium plating to make it shinier - this soon starts to wear off), v little surface detail (so it's easy to clean and doesn't get caught on anything), and not 9 or 14 ct gold as these will tarnish & wear a lot faster when exposed to a lot of water.

FWIW, if you don't want gold, it's possible to get plain titanium rings (v hardwearing, not v reactive, hypoallergenic), or you could have silver (made into a chunky enough ring, it wears pretty well), or platinum (harder than silver, shame it's so expensive).

A lot of independant jewellers, goldsmiths, and silversmiths in the UK have websites, so if you can't find what you like at the price you can afford, try the net.

Thanks Greebo - that's really helpful. My engagement ring is platinum - so it would be nice to get that again, but it is so expensive!

Indian jewellers on Ealing Road, Wembley called Raju putny, i thimnk thats how it's spelt! They do really beautiful wedding rings... it's all 22carat gold and sold by weight. The white gold stuff inn there is amazing and if you're buying more than one thing, they will give you a better price ;)

I have had some lovely comments about my welding band.
Not over the top but lusterous enough.
Its white gold, the first one I tried and it fitted (I have tiny hands)...

... no one ever knows it was £23 from Argos unless I tell them!! :D

Definitely don't get a white gold ring if you have a platinum engagement ring. Platinum is a really hard metal and will rub the plating off in no time.

There is also palladium, which is in the same group of metals as platinum but costs much less.

Price seem to be: up to £50 for titanium, around £120+ for palladium and anything from £400 to £2000 for platinum.
You can't really tell the difference between palladium and platinum- they are both hard, shiny, silver looking metals. titanium is lighter and a dull gunmetal grey colour.
I really like titanium and am very allergic to nickel, but my partner won't let me have a ring made out of it. She is making me get palladium.

Our wedding rings were from Swag, they are platinum.

Mine was about £120 I think, it's only a narrow band because I only have little fingers!

Can't remember how much Michaels was.

Fuckin hell man!

Just looked at Stephen wotsit.. those rings are well expensive!

Get yer arse down to Swag and get platinum and save a fortune!

Well I was going to get a silver one from Steven Einhorn - which I didn't think was massively expensive for a wedding ring. I really really like the idea of having this 2000 year old Thames wood in a ring - what with having been born/brought up here. But it doesn't sound too suitable for our lifestyles. I might get myself one in the future sometime as I'm more likely to be able to look after it than gaijinboy - who'll just lose his patience.

I'll take a look at SWAG though.

I can't stand gold/gold coloured/white gold - so it will have to be silver/platinum/titanium.

Gaijinboy wants titanium because he says it's a "man-metal".. something to do with fighter jets or somesuch nonsense.

She could get proper white gold then it wouldn't rub off the plating :)

Gg, are there any art/design jewellery colleges in your area? There definetly is some in London and they should be having their end of year shows about now. I think the Duncan of Jordanstone(?) in Dundee has theirs this weekend. Good place to check things out and see if there are any new designers prepared to help?

I bought my first two Valentines girlfriends gold bracelets from Argos :)

One of them cost 109 quid (!)

e2a: the other one, um, didn't cost 109 quid :o

Ours were Ernest Jones, we got 10% off because that's where he bought the engagement ring. We get a free polish every 12 months.
Mine was platinum and cost about £350, his was white gold and was about £200.

I'd rather a ring from Ernest Jones than Samuel's it has to be said! :D

I guess you'd have to go instore they'll probably have a bigger range. There's one in Kingston and Croydon (I think) if that helps?

This is platinum and £350 from H Samuel :hmm:

Yeah.. and in Bromley too - but given that there's NO plain platinum rings at all on their website and nothing even close to the price we were looking at - it seems pretty unlikely they'll have anything suitable even if their range is larger.

Maybe I'll call and ask.

anyway... I'm in a bad wedding mood right now - could quite happily ram any wedding rings up where the sun don't shine...

(thanks for your help anyway) :)

Fair point about going all the way there for nothing! ;)

I just read your other thread and didn't know what the fuck to say that might help! :o:D:(

Well this new girlfriend lives in Vauxhall - perhaps you could run her over or set your dog on her or something - that would probably solve the problem.. :D

I know William Prophet on Lower Marsh in Waterloo will make one-off rings to order. It would certainly be worth talking to them: http://www.williamprophet.com/

ooh.. I like those spot rings! I might just get one of those anyway.

Clearly, I'm going to end up buying lots of rings for myself and utterly fail to get a wedding ring.

Isn't the wedding rings supposed to be the groom's job anyway?

Only if he's really trustworthy. :)

Mrs V washed her white gold band down a cafe sink and it cost £60 to replace. Buggered if I can remember how much mine cost however I doubt we paid more than £150 in total.

Yes.. that's the same shop I linked to. But butterfly child said I should go there because they're cheaper than the ones I was looking at - but they're MASSIVELY more expensive....

They've only got a small percentage of their stock on the website.. go instore and have a look.

Michael says he thinks both of ours were £300.

It is definitely worth going instore.. and Kingston aint far from Brixton.. I promise you, there are dozens of "ordinary" platinum rings for a lot less than you were looking at with Stephen wotsit and his "Thames Wood".

Thames Wood.. I ask ya.. does it come with provenance?

What price are you looking to spend on wedding rings?

Gaijinboy wants titanium because he says it's a "man-metal".. something to do with fighter jets or somesuch nonsense.

This just made me laugh out loud, as it is so like something Kyser would say. When I repeated it to him.. he laughed too, then looked a bit envious at the thought of Gaijinboy having access to titanium :D

What's with the wood restrictions? I'd have thought wood would at least be... um... I don't know, DURABLE?? As if it doesn't get wet standing around in the forest, ffs!!

Thames Wood.. I ask ya.. does it come with provenance?

Well yes it does actually - have a look on the website - that's why I like it so much.

"Discovered during excavations on a site just north of London Bridge, this Oak - Thames Wood - has been verified and dated by Dr Martin Bridge of University College London using the extremely accurate method of dendrochronology, and is owned exclusively by Stephen Einhorn."

It does also say they've found some way to make it waterproof though - and Wrysmile's comment about trees in the forest has me thinking.

The SWAG stores in Croydon and Bromley South are much closer than Kingston, I'll give them a ring (ooh a pun!) to check if they do have any plain rings that are vastly cheaper than those they advertise online.

yeah.. and it says they've got some way of making it all waterproof and stuff.. but apparently that's what they said to gaijinboy when he went to visit them. I might call them.
