Aim is to get this into a sticky. I may even produce a poll if there's a few consistant ones that popup.

I use www.34sp.com following dyslexic1's recomenndation a couple of years ago, and I've been with them ever since. Their service is excellent, and I have since used them for clients, friends and family alike.

Their support is top notch, and even their most basic package comes with PHP, SQL, pop3 accounts and stats.

If you'd like a more indepth or techy guide to hosting check out alt.www.webmaster on Usenet or www.webhostingtalk.com

Above all else:

STAY AWAY FROM FASTHOSTS.CO.UK & THEIR RESELLERS!

i have used gradwell at

http://www.gradwell.com for the past 5 years and found them to be very good

they provide a variety of accounts with different features depending on what you need\want.

not the cheapest but I have found them to be very reliable with a comprehensive control panel

ditto re fasthosts btw...

I'm using http://www.eurovps.com/ who, although they big themselves up on their website a little too much for my taste, I've never had a problem with at all. However, the really cheap account I'm on (1GB space for €4.95 per month) seems to have disappeared from their site. I'm able to host as many domains as I want, as many databases or FTP accounts etc., as long as it stays within that size limit - far better, IMO, than firms who stick an artificial limit on these things.

The server is located in Amsterdam, and seems faster than the no-name companies who stick their customers on dirt-cheap servers in America.

:)

I use oneandone i have no problems . I also use a mate of mines server/hosting service which is great.

We use zen for all of ours. V. reliable. Never known any downtime. But TBH no idea what the others are like as we've never tried them

I use www.ev1servers.net in the US for my main site; best deal I've seen on dedicated servers bar 1&1, and I've dealt with them before - never again. EV1 used to be Rackshack. Superb customer service, been with them for a few years now. Highly recommended if you need a dedicated server. Costs me about £85 a month for a Redhat P4 2Ghz, 1Gb RAM, 1000Gb bandwidth.

I used to use the British www.web-mania.com for little projects - £20 a year and always served me well. I don't know how they fare these days but lots of my friends still use them based on my recommendation.

For domains I use ukreg.com - a Fasthosts company I'm afraid but using them means you can administrate your own domains. No more awful transfers!

1&1 are good, but with reservations. After several hours on the phone to their call centre (where no one could tell me a thing about any problems I might have when uploading to a remote server) I just e-mailed them and got simple answers and instructions straight away.

Other than that, they offer more bandwidth at a better price than most hosts - I post mutiple mp3s on my site so need a lot more space than the average personal website.

So all in all, good stuff - just don't bother phoning them!

Not been terribly impressed with easily.co.uk - I've been with them for years, but they never upgrade their software (PHP still at version 4.1.2 etc, I had to change servers to get a Perl to over v5.0 etc), their FTP access is really slow, and their tech support is entirely run by monkeys.

(It's been quite educational though, I've had to learn a lot about Apache so that I could argue with them that, yes, this was actually possible and no, there wasn't any reason they couldn't do it.)

http://www.dreamhost.com/ are probably going to be my next hosts.

This going to be a sticky. Only for some one to ask on Tuesday and the Friday, How does the Search thing work here

well, at least we can say "LOOK AT THE STICKY THREAD YOU FOOL" whenever it comes up again...

Maybe it would be better in the web forum?

I will throw my favourate free web hosting in.

100% free
35gb bandwidth a month
100mg web space
no popups
no adverts

Unfortunately it does not run PHP, CGI etc so it is pretty basic but ideal as an alternative to the hideously advert ridden angelfire and all those shite free deals

I looked at these, but you have to have quite a bit of knowledge to use them i found, so i went with afterdawn.net, only been using them a day but they seem quite good and the guy Chris put up with me having MySQL problems on support for about 2 hours solid haha  :D

I've been using a windows reseller package from Stormhosts.net for the past 18month and never had a problem. When i've got in touch with their support they have answered any question within the hour, often in less than 10 minutes

Well, here's what I've used for the last couple of years - all odds and sods and updated bit and pieces for all webmasters and creators... go on, take a look: www.4uhosting.co.uk

I've been with this lot for just over a year now and have been mightily impressed. Loads of scripts & progs built in for easy setup and they get updated which is a bonus. Good control panel and the few times I've needed support they've sorted it by email nice and quick. :)

The Positive Internet Company Ltd.
The best hosting I've ever used bar none but you do pay for this type of service and they just are very very good and their service level agreements write that level of uptime and performance into your contract and work like it says on the box, 99% uptime over a year, no more than 60 minuets consecutive downtime.

leafish web hosting
I've got a site hosted with these guys which routes quite a lot of email for ~15 people. Support is a bit thin but it works, it is cheap and I really hate dealing with big business. Much better off dealing with your friends in my opinion.

I use the excellent yet reasonably priced Dataflame;

www.dataflame.co.uk

A fiver a month and I get 1 gig of space and 25 gigs bandwidth, host three different domains, mysql etc etc.

Excellent, fast-response customer service too

I find Easily Limited pretty good, and cheap.

www.easily.co.uk

I particularly like the way that they charge per gig of data transfer, rather than a monthly fee.

So basically if you have a web site with low usage, it costs you very little to "run". It only costs more if it becomes very popular.

I use www.purple-paw.com/ and have found them to be very professional. Linux + Apache, CGI/PHP/PERL, pop3, Mysql on the better packages. Never down in 3 years (well once, for 10 minutes). Excellent email support, very prompt, even on a Sunday.
