Don't think the coppers liked being filmed very much. Brings home the intrusive nature of random stop and searches of any kind for people who've never experienced this, too.


Peripheral question: are they allowed to use S44 to obtain someone's ID by looking at their credit cards, etc?

It is a stop-and-search power which is exercised whenever an authorisation is in place for the particular area where the power is exercised. It doesn't confer any power of arrest. So it doesn't allow them to "do what they like".

A person who is stopped is not required to give a name or address, but if that person has identification on them which is found during the search, then obviously the officer may find out who that person is.

They don't even need to believe that .... there is no requirement of reasonable suspicion, or even actual suspicion of anything to allow them to operate section 44.

I don't believe that this power is necessary and I think that the authorisations are being handed out too readily and renewals of them are being rubber-stamped.
