We went to Morrison's

Just a reminder that Morrisons were the only FTSE top 100 business who don't donate to charity.

I only go there for the loss leaders thesedays

I used to live right next to a Morrisons and found it fine (cheaper than tesco and sainsburys) but now i only have a Netto (okish) or Asda.......and i find Asda to be cheaper than morrisons by a tad......miss morrisons meat though !

Netto has shite fruit and veg.......does my head in !

What's the quality of the stuff like? Is it all right? Is the soft fruit edible?

It's pretty shit tbh, when I was living in Bideford it was our only option (all the local shops being shut in the evenings) - everything seems to go off far too quickly... I don't buy much soft fruit (although I can tell you their raspberries, strawbs and bananas are piss poor), but eat loads of veg; the selection is poor, quality is dire.

Fuck Morrisons.

There's a great supermarket I go to called Booths were it costs £80 a week just for my food. They do lots of 'one for the price of two' offers and stuff like that.

It's well good.
They're not cheap! I used to work for 'em. Good for shoppers, a bit rubbish for staff, but could be worse.

But how do you know the labels are genuine? That's my concern.

What with the word of fake condoms being sold in Hackney, I'm quite paranoid about this now.

Vanessa on BBC London has been doing a phone-in about value supermarkets, some woman rang in and said she sops at Lidl's but she pronounces it Li-Dells as it sound less common!:D

she was a real fan was'nt she, she even got Vanessa saying 'li-dell' by the end of the conversation:eek::D

I'm quite lucky where I live - within walking distance of both Lidl and Aldi - I noticed when I was is Lidl earlier that they are doing 70 per cent of most of their fruit and veg this week (their limes were only 4p each:cool:)

Christ I did exactly the same thing as Stobart and shopped around to try and afford a weeks shopping. We also went to Morrisons but rather than a pleasant suprise I encountered a part of humanity I have not come into contact with in many years. I don't want to sound snobish and I'm hardly posh myself but fuck me it's rough in that shop, at least our local shop anyway. It's amazing that it is just 3 miles away from Tesco, you would think it's on another planet given the kind of customer in there and dare I say it, the staff are as bad. While we were there two security guards who both looked like nightclub bouncers had to forcefully evict some old geezer, for what I have no idea but there was quite a show went on. The rest of the customers were a mix of obese women, blokes who barged into me looking like they wanted a scrap, tracksuited couples with prams and old alcoholic ladies.

What is it that attracts them all to this one place? I think I have found out - it's all the fucking salt in EVERYTHING! I challenge anyone to buy something from morrisons without a McDonalds sized portion of salt in it. They probably salt the carrots. The mash potato with cabbage and spring onion had me gagging where as the colcannon from Tesco is really nice.

Might try Asda next week.

What a bunch of fucking snobs on this thread. There's nowt wrong with Morrisons in term of quality of food or shopper. I shop there regularly, and their fruit and veg are fine.

The selection is no worse than the grocers, although they do definitely over-use packaging.

Their meat is also pretty good, and it's all British!

Well, looks like it's back to Waitrose next week. The bread from Morrison's was fine yesterday but tasted like shite this morning. The orange juice tasted awful.
can't fault the rack of ribs we bought, they were really nice, but that's about it.
If I do two more spinning classes a week that will pay for my Waitrose habit.:p

It must be depending on what area you go to. This branch in Chingford has competition from a huge Sainsbury's just down the road, near the dog track, so maybe they try to keep it looking nice to attract more customers.

That Sainsburys round the corner from the bus stops?
I used to have a boyfriend who lived there :hmm:

Really? The one here can be quite a freakshow. It is the only store yet where when paying by card, the assistant has called-in about me to the supervisor to say "yes, this one looks quite reputable"

Then there are the "wildlife" who haunt the carpark, who can be quite offputting/intimmidating at times. :(

If you have to put a quid in the fucking shopping trolly it just signals bad news.

I'm not sure on reasoning behind this? Is it because they think people without cars might fuck off with a trolley and not bring it back part from the incentive of a scratchcard on the deal or maybe it's the crap metal value?

Jeebus, some of the attitudes on this thread are really quite nasty and sneering.........

you wouldn't get away with it on other parts of the boards.........

fucking bunch of snobs !

I often shop in the Chingford Morrisons and (until they did their recent refurb after which I couldn't find owt) always found it to be fine for most things. Never liked their bread much, always seems a big wool-like after a day and their value range isn't very good ime. Fish counter is good though, I'm not a big veg eater and don't eat meat so can't comment on those, always seem to have lots of bogof offers on and often good deals on wine and freezer stuff.

meat was really good in the palmers green & wood green morrisons. good booze offers too. plus they did two foot long rectangular pork pies for £7.99 - didn't try any of those, though.

That Morrisons in Wood Green is closest to where I live. I have used it once to try it out but was shocked at the calibre of person perusing the aisles. They all looked like they had just crawled out of a charity bin. They also seemed to be watching and there was an air of competiveness in getting food from the shelves, as though someone would try and snatch away what I was reaching for just so they could have it and I couldn't . I did not enjoy the shopping experience there. I came out feeling angry and irritable. :(

They do make a nice date and walnut loaf tho. :D

So, no one in praise of the mighty Netto?

79p bottles of stella. You can't argue really.

oh and as Mentalchik noted, theres nothing like a supermarket thread for winkling out the m/c snobs. :D

It should be pronounced "Leed-ull". With a slightly sharper "d" than we usually use in English. There is no 's' on the end. It really winds me up when people put 's's on the ends of shop names where there aren't any.

Whatever next.

I like Lidl, and, when I was in Belgium, I liked Aldi.

Here I use Mini Preco and Lidl. Just read the labels to make sure of the quality of product.

There must be something good about Aldi. I have yet to find it myself and I think it's impossible to do a whole weeks shopping but there has to be something cos the local one attracts some quite wealthy customers.

Netto is for alcoholics who don't eat and feed the family on crisps and biscuits and the staff are terrible. Expect the shelf stackers to not give way to customers in there. I'm a pisshead so I regularly go there for the booze section and to date I've only found one other really good product which is this large packet of cooked ham for a fiver. It's really nice ham but it's not particularly cheap.

Being the sort of bloke who usually shops in Lidl (although I have shopped in Morrisons and occasionally Tescos'), Imagine my surprise when nescessity forced me to pop into my local Budgens......

In my muddy shorts and 'tesco value' vest, I felt quite out of place, I never thought a supermarket would make me feel inappropriately dressed, I almost fell over when I got to the till, too. I was only in there for a few 'bits' too!

I am now going to the pound shops in Ilford or the local one in Barkingside to buy things like kitchen towels, liquid soaps and shampoo. It's a hell of a saving if you add it all up over one year.

same here, except to a shop called B&Ms. It's halfway between what Wilkos used to be for food/groceries, and a poundshop. Some ace bargains in there. We get our loo roll, kitchen roll, tuna for the cat, and other various bits and bobs. We've only started popping in over the past couple of months, and have yet to fully explore its amazing prices. Again, it's all brand stuff, but usually foreign (I got a bag of Australian M&Ms from there the other day, for example).

We never shopped at Morrison's originally because Mr Paw used to work there and had awful memories, so we used to go to Tesco. Tesco was also closer at the time, and easiest to get to and fro from. When we did venture into Morrison's it was overcrowded, badly set out, and felt like there was always a scrum. I always felt sorry for them on the till in their horrible uniforms too. Then Mr Paw started working at Sainsbury's, so we started shopping there because of the discount (which wasn't much, but still). He hasn't worked there for some time now, but we've gotten into the habit of doing most of the main food shop from there. We still pop into Tesco during the week for extras. There is an Asda somewhere around here, but it's not handy. If it was, I'd probably put my ethical objections to one side and have a nose to see if it was any cheaper. Let's face it, none of 'em are sweethearts, are they?

I really can't see any point in being snobbish about food. FFS, most of it comes from the same fucking factory anyway, just has different packaging :D

Aldi have got lots of American stuff in at the moment, they do this every year round Independence Day - bottles of maple syrup for 2 quid, 3 packs of Reece's peanut butter bars etc etc:cool:

Aldi stock some very odd things - like air compressors and angle grinders -- and the weirdest fishing rods you've ever seen. I've bought a fair few tools, but can't say I've bought much food in there - apart from cakes and pastries ... their smoothies are decidedly odd...
