"We need to be clear here, graffiti is a crime "

DrRingDing said:
Anybody who lives in said area cares enough to turn up and muck in.
So the opinions of old people/working people/busy mums etc etc - all of whom have far better things to do with their precious time than go around judging the supposed artistic merits of adolescent scribblings - get completely ignored, then?

DrRingDing said:
I'm sure the kids doing this would like to improve and share their skills. Give em space to practice and meet.

This may well improve the standard of graffiti overall in the area.
You're assuming that people want graffiti sprayed all over their area in the first place.

DrRingDing said:
It's mainly kids doing it not middle class professionals living in run down inner city areas.

Funnily enough, the people I knew doing graff in Birmingham in the 90's were men in their 30's.

If you can't be arsed to go to a half hour meeting, even an online bulletin board, write a letter to the group, leave a message on the groups answerphone, or even send an email to an email group, then you really don't care enough.

There's going to be graffiti if you want it or not. Unless you have excessive funds and a heart of steel to implement a "Zero Tolerance" policy, criminalising many young people.

Of course!

Old people, young mums, hard working dads, foreign workers etc etc really have nothing better to do with their time than give up their time to cast their critical eye over JiMmYZ latest scrawl every week!

Err, that's not what I mean and I think you know that.

How can a piece of graffiti upset you if you don't see it?

You'd have to be a proper old git to actively go around hunting graffiti to moan about.

It'd be great actually.

"Mr Ferentes, sir, how should we reform the education system to benefit a wider range of pupils?"

"I'll have a think about it and make my decision later. Now buy me a pint."

"Mr Ferentes sir, what is our policy to be on relations with Middle Eastern states?"

"Not made up my mind yet. Packet of crisps and some pork scratchings."

It's a great idea, but you need a veneer of democracy.

So I'll have a Stella & a whiskey chaser while we work out what to do with Burma.

Back on track my first house after leaving home had TOOTI NUNG sprayed on it's side. Which was nice as long as no Holy Smokes came by and killed you like.

Putting your own tastes above the community's?
You wouldn't be mistaking your tastes for those of "the community" there would you ... ?

(That's a massive problem with all this sort of thing - people talk of "the community" as if it is some sort of homogenous group where everyone shares the same opinion on things ... when it's absolutely nothing of the sort)

Bit like, say, the council then? Anybody who lives in said area and cares enough to put themselves up for election as a representative of the local people.

Are you saying that graffiti is usually hidden from view, then?

What a truly bizarre claim.

I think it should be decided by me, up the pub, as should most things.

I disagree. It should be me, down the pub, as should most things.

Bloody councils give permission for great big billboards but won't allow a bit of art, ah no money in that
You won't hear me disagreeing on that score.

The worst vandalism is the shit adverts they cover phone boxes with, making them potentially dangerous ( you often cant see if anyone's in there until you open the door - and all sorts of nefarious activities go on in the phone boxes around here).

Nobody has made that claim yer twazzock.

Deluded fool.

I like grafitti in public bogs but you hardly see any these days cos the bog partitions are now made of some sort of Formica-type stuff which you can't write on or even scratch.

I hate tags and dream of being able to cleanse them all from London overnight.

Yeah right! Like I'm the one suggesting some sort of "Community Graffiti Assessment Panel" ...

This says a lot more about you than it does about the issue of graffiti.

DrRingDing said:
You have absolutely no solutions for something you seem so wound up about.
It's not me that wound up pal, and it's certainly not me dreaming up laughably naive 'Community Graffiti Assessment Panels' while apparently claiming that people have to 'hunt around' to find graffiti in their area.

Lies, lies and more lies.

Have you thought about being a councillor?

But maybe just being an old man that goes around counting dog turds in the street and writing in to your local rag to complain is more you style :D
