We keep being told rents are going down

They're certainly going down here, my mate got €200 pm knocked off hers ( from 1100 to 900 for a four bedroomed house). My landlord has never increased by rent since we moved in, even though the going rate increased from the 900 we pay up to 1400 pm, dropping back down now to 800-900 again. But that's because there is a massive oversupply of housing stock in Ireland due to the greedy builders. House prices are still dropping too *sits tight and holds on to wallet*.

To be honest I don't think that's the only reason for heading back north and east, it's partly because Ealing is shit (in their opinion);).

:(

I love ealing.

Some of the best pubs in London... If you like pubs! And the BEST restaurant's you'll ever find.

Not much in the way of nightlife tho.

you what?!! <~~ My 1st thought on reading that.

So I emailed two of my friends that live out that way: Name me a good pub in Ealing?

Both replied: Don't know any, sorry.

:D:D

The Wheatsheif
The Red Lion
The Castle
The Drayton Court (lovely garden, great building)
Lodge Tavern (for da youf)
The Rose and Crown (great food, lovely garden)
The Plough

Ealing Pub Crawl for the win. Srsly.

HMO properties are holding or rising in rental value because people that typically rent them can't afford to rent 1/2/3 bed places. That is a case of supply and demand and was totally unclear from your OP.

Yes - those with the least end up being charged the most because they're a captive audience that can't be choosy.

We are also in no position to bargain with landlords - it's a case of either pay up or get out.

Those of us at the botom of the pile are always the first to loose out and the last (if at all) to benefit.

I've a few friends who private rent and have had their rents reduced when they've asked for it.

As I say, those of us who can only afford a small bedsit are in no position to make bargains. If we won't pay, there's thousands of people out there looking for accomodation who will.

But there are people in small bedsits who've posted on here who've negtiated rent reductions?

Is this going to be like the job you've been claiming to hate since you joined here but refuse to consider even looking for another one?

Why not move into a shared house? I'm not exactly the most sociable person, but I've never lived in a bad shared house yet, and I've always made new friends when I've done it.

Bedsits are lonely and depressing imo, and you're isolated when dealing with landlords.

If you really must live in a gloomy bedsit, why not leaflet your neighbours with an aim to forming an informal Private Tenant's Union? If you've got a shit landlord chances are plenty of people round your way (especially in London) will as well, and a couple may be up for doing something about it.

Or you could just try nothing, and sit on the computer moaning about how people and the left aren't interested in doing practical stuff.

You forget that poster342002 lives in the 17th century and would be cudgeled* about the head for his impudence to his betters, then sold to a Turk to end his days as a galley slave on the Barbary Coast.

And what would the cod left do? we'd stand there laughing and drinking champagne as he was dragged off into white slavery

It's not the cod left any more, our Masters have told us its being overfished so they can hog all the cod to themselves. The best we're allowed now is coley.

I've heard enough horror stories from thsoe that have done this about the intersprsonal politics and dynamics, petty thefts, invasions of privacy etc etc that take hold to put me off for life.

This becomes difficult when you find more and more landords employ one or more of the residents to do odd-jobs and so forth (often let off rent-rises, too) and eventually end up being given the responsiblity of filling vacant flats with their own shitty, dodgy mates.

These scabbing areholes can rapidly take on the unofficial role of "deputy landlord" (replete with being given copies of keys to other tenents' flats) and end up right up the landlord's backside to the detriment of the other residents.

Once a landlord thinks you're a bit "uppity", life can start to get rather difficult.

If you're prepared to move if you don't get the deal you want (or suspect there will be consequences even if do) then you have the upper hand. If you stay, getting shafted, expect that continue.

I know moving is a massive pain, but sometimes it's the only way of resolving something.

You can help me out then. I'm moving into a rented house for the first time in 15 years and I'm going to have to get a sharer in, and I'm a terrible judge of character.

If I teach you how to hold your ale will you teach me how to screen my applicants?

Sure, I'll come vet them if they are local ;)

It's not the ale :D

Never lived in a bad share either. There's interviews and shit... I'm a good judge of character and lived in shares for 15 years.

Exactly, interviews and a bit of nouse will never let you down. My worst housemate ever was a lovely bloke, who I'm still in touch with who was a bit noisy when drinking tea and eating bacon sarnies... Oh and there was the David Icke/George Galloway fan but even he meant well, and was a decent fella.

Poster - To be honest if my life was as depressing as yours, I'd try and get some sort of medication, preffereably from the doctor. When everyone around you seems like a dodgy character, thief, cunt, whatever it probably means there's something wrong with you.:)

When you're stuck in this end of the housing market, all moving is likely to do is palce you in a similar place with all the same type of problems (or worse).
