would it be best for me to close the bedroom door at night, so that she gets used to us not being accessible in the mornings?

Yes, yes, and thrice yes. I let my cute little ginger ball of fluff sleep with me at an early age.

<fast forward twelve years>

I am now woken every night by a stone of ginger tabby drooling, scratching, sneezing, belching and wriggling right next to my head. He also licks off my moisturiser before I go to sleep. :( Not good when you are knackered & want a good night's sleep, or want a lie-in. I am training my kitten to sleep outside the bedroom.

ahhh, she looks so sweet!

about the leaving them thing, i've not heard of a cat getting upset when you leave the house...a few, a very few might, but they would probably have *problems*, and from what you've said, even though she's an ex-stray, she sounds pretty confident. i've had to leave mine on it's own for whole weekends and apart from being greeted by a huge sulk, she's always been fine.

wouldn't recommend you do this at this stage with yours though, i've had my cat for years. as long as there's someone home at some point during the day, especially if the cat can't go out at the moment (which your's possibly shoulnd't do til she's better?) she should be fine.

oh yes, how true! the drool is quite unpleasant as well

oh and how i'll never forget waking up to a cat's arse RIGHT in my face

she still comes in the bedroom though, nowt like a cat for a hot water bottle! just bear in mind that toes wriggled under the duvet = mice as far as kitty is concerned!

Yes, me & my cat play a little game every night - I get into bed, move my feet about and she pounces on them and rips holes in the duvet cover with her claws and teeth.

Kea - you can try shutting her outside the bedroom at night, but it doesn't always work. Mine will just sit outside and scratch the door until I open it. If If I don't open it, they tear up the carpet

Yes, it's nice wen they cuddle up to you all purring & cosy like a little sandbag. :)

My cat killed & ate a mouse last night & I was dreading the prospect of horrible dead-mouse-breath in my face all night  , luckily he had "a good night" & slumped at the end of the bed all night.

tbh i think she's confident BECAUSE she's a stray. she also seems very self-reliant and resourceful, which is good, cos she can clearly occupy herself quite happily.

Photo is at home at least half the time most days (students  ). yeah she's not going out til she's been chipped, neutered etc etc.

i left the door closed last nite and we had no problems. once i'd woken up and come downstairs to make a cup of tea, she came upstairs and played in the bedroom while i drank my tea in bed - but she didn't bother us at all before that. a good sign!

think we need to get her thinking 'mice elimination' tho - came downstairs this morning, the cat sprawled on the floor miowing to be stroked and a mouse shot along the kitchen counter back into its hole

I think cats get very disturbed when their environment changes in any way. This includes the temperature going up or down, the furniture being moved about, people coming in who weren't there previously and people being absent who are normally present.
:(

Why do you think that, Donna? I can't say I've noticed either of my cats being that sensitive - although I've had cats who tended to absent themselves if there were children around.

ok here they are -

with her toy mouse Photo bought for her (which has so far been comprehensively scorned in favour of a piece of string!) -

She's looking lovely Kea. Is that a FULL bottle of veuve clicquot in the background or a now empty 'welcome new cat celebration' bottle? ;)

Aw!

If she was a bit more ginger she'd look like my mum's cat. :)

Your are NOT dressing our bloody cat. She is a feirce hunter not some sissy namby pamby thing.

You realise you have an important job here Photo. Only you can save the wee mouser from having a knitted bonnet strapped to its head.

It's a proven fact that the only body adornment for cats is a small skullcap made from orange peel. And then only if you address the cat as his/her holiness afterwards.

Elvis and Moz (in my last house) had gold and silver sparkly collars respectively. Elvis in particular looked damn funky, all black with gold sparkly collar
