We all hate R n B right?

I remain none the wiser as to what R n B actually is. If it stands for Rythm and Blues as it did originally then the stuff called RnB aint at all the same thing, and I'm sure they have just adopted the tag to confuse old folk like me.
Seems to me to be anything moden pop music with a beat, perhaps with or without a rapper appearing at the start or in the middle, and often with a beat especially suitable for booming from cars.
I like Rhianna's SOS for some reason, though not enough to buy it as I would very soon tire of it if I listened to it a few more times. As with Umbrella, although I'm not too sure if it is the song or just the video (which features an umbrella, you see).:)

Destiny's first big hit in '98, 'No No No' was a slow tempo. Since then, the genre has speeded up as a whole.

umm your right(and i had forgotten that one) but wasn't it the wycleff remix that got them attention which was a lot faster. I don't think i actully heard the original for a fair few months after i had heard the "club" version.

i can't think of too many fast rnb songs if you can fair play. if you wanna give examples then fairer play. rnb for me is failt slow/mid tempo certainly all the stuff i listen to anyway. Might be a preference rather then anything, but can people give emaple to back stuff up rather then just saying im wrong(its weird so few artits/bands are mentioned on this thread). its at least helpful.

jeneifer lopez got called rnb a fair bit if memory serves as well. are popele happy with that? and either way where is the line.

Ahh yeah, that's true - even the other version is not so much faster than 'no scrubs' that you could call it a different genre on that account though.

I think in the pop echelon, whether a band gets labelled as RnB or semi-RnB may have something to do with their ethnicity. Witness Sugababes; whilst they'll share producers and writers with the likes of Girls Aloud and Kylie, they're more likely to be called RnB than either of them, and whilst that's partly because they have done more RnB-related work in addition, they also have Keisha Buchanan, with other black girls previously.

Bit suprised we haven't mentioned En Vogue at all. "My Lovin' (You're Never Gonna Get It)" and "Whatta Man" are great singles, and "Funky Divas" wasn't a bad album.

One great song I listened to today was Jermaine Dupri's "Sweetheart". It's produced by JD with him rapping in it a bit, but it also features the excellently voiced if completely bonkers Mariah Carey. It's a very smooth, rolling tune which I could've imagined being a hit if it had got more exposure.

Ray Charles' Shake A Tale Feather is pretty lively and the Rolling Stones did lots of umptempo records. Lately, Nelly Furtado, Gwen Stefani and Pink have done some dancefloor bangers and Timbaland has produced quite a few too

i've been enjoying a lot of recent pop r&b - trousersnake & furtardo's latest stuff has been ace, rhianna is wicked, timberland is generally quite consistent... i don't even mind the pussycat dolls too much.

it certainly isn't worth hating...

They did have their moments, for a time you couldn't do anywhere without hearing 'Hold On' - the acapella opening was just so versatile.

I confess to enjoying Rhianna, Furtado and sometimes the Pussycat Dolls when they come on a music channel, but not enough to purchase anything.

SOS and Umbrella are great!
