WC qualifiers - Argentina out?

They were atrocious last night. I mean really, really, really bad. I honestly think the level of tactical ineptitude on display was worse than both Keegan and Mclaren by some distance.

Not at all = it was spot on. There was nothing - defence terrible, midfield dire. Messi isolated, no second striker.
Going solely on the Guardian feed, Messi was the only one to come out of the game with any credit (out of the Argies, naturally) - wanting the ball everywhere and desperately trying to make something happen.

Yep but you could see him getting more and more frustrated as the game went on...the team offered nothing. I;ve seen better defending in non-league football.

Argentina still have a fair chance of getting through to the play-offs at least (where they'd most likely face a fairly crap Costa Rica). They have the absolute worst team in South America (Peru) at home, a match which even Maradona would struggle to lose. With the run-in being the way it is, Argentina may only need the 3 points from Peru.

Here's a measure of how abysmal Argentina are right now.

Somewhere around the 75th minute Maradona brought on Martin Palermo - a lumbering 35 year old target man who hasn't played for the national team for nine years. He lacked almost any kind of quality but he was still their most effective player in the final stretch of play simply because he ran around barging into Paraguay's defenders creating havoc.

Then in the 80 something minute Maradona brought on a lumbering 36 year old centre half for his debut. This man Schiavi's performance was only really notable because right at the death he had a chance to equalise while playing as an auxiliary striker. Palermo nodded an upfield punt across the face of goal and Schiavi sort of thew himself at it like some kind of crash test dummy and failed to make any contact with the ball.

That was Argentina's best chance in the match.

I'll be gutted if Argentina don't make, given that Wales never qualify Argentina are a good second team to support - strong Welsh links through Patagonia, good record against England and good chance they might actually win it! Plus, without them who will the commentators/summarizers use to trot out their classic cliches/stereotypes about 'cynical attutudes' and 'Latin temperaments'. To quote Clive Tyldsley during the fracas/handbags when they went out to Germany last time: 'this is what they're capable of'. Stuart Pearce also referred to them as a 'mob'. Like Deareg pointed out above, time to get over it!

no offence, but isn't it about time you got over that? i am fucking sick of hearing about it, he was one of the best players ever to grace a football pitch
Bet there'd be no complaints if an English player did summit similar during a World Cup final ;)

It's curious and interesting how sometimes it seems there is a process that has to be undertaken before things can move on; Argentina are currently doing it with Maradonna, England did it with Keegan, Newcastle also, Tottenham did it with Hoddle, the great heros have to be seen to fail.

Newcastle haven't completed the process with Shearer, but they have to before that club can move on. Maradonna also.

Just been looking at the table and the remaining fixtures on Wikipedia:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2010_FIFA_World_Cup_qualification_(CONMEBOL)

Brazil 16 9 6 1 32 9 +23 33
Paraguay 16 9 3 4 22 13 +9 30
Chile 16 8 3 5 27 20 +7 27
Ecuador 16 6 5 5 21 23 −2 23
Argentina 16 6 4 6 20 19 +1 22
Uruguay 16 5 6 5 26 18 +8 21
Venezuela 16 6 3 7 22 27 −5 21
Colombia 16 5 5 6 10 14 −4 20
Bolivia 16 3 3 10 20 34 −14 12
Peru 16 2 4 10 9 32 −23 10

Argentina don't just have to overhaul Ecuador, but also have to look over their shoulders to ensure they finish fifth.

They have Peru at home which they should win, and a very tasty away fixture in Uruguay, who start away to Ecuador.

Sadly Venezuela, who used to be the Luxembourg of South America and have never qualified to my knowledge, still have to play the top two.

Columbia play Chile home and away and will fall short.

Had to check that for statto's sake, indeed they are the only South American team never to have qualified for a WC (although technically Surinam, Guyana and French Guyana are South American countries, and quite why in the name of buggery they aren't in the South America section god only knows.

It's them that can't beat us these days.

When Argentine fans get over Rattin being sent off in '66, and not before. Then we'll spend the next 50 years complaining about Beckham being sent off for retaliating by kicking out at an overreacting Simeone soon after Batistuta had landed a good solid off the ball kick on an unreacting Sol Campbell without even conceding a free kick. That should last well past the last bleats about Owen's so called dive in Korea. Which leaves us with Tony Adam's wrongly disallowed goal in France.

At which point we win.

In the mean time Germany and Brazil will probably have won three world cups each. It's important to remember who the REAL enemies are. :)

You could say the same about Australia being in the Asian section, and Israel being in UEFA.

Suriname are currently ranked 111 in the world, Guyana 121 and French Guiana aren't actually independent and so aren't members of FIFA. They'd get mashed in the South America group.

Israel are in the UEFA section because the Middle eastern teams refused to play them. Australia I agree, that was something to do with the lack of competition in the Oceania bit, they used to absolutely piss every game and then usually lose the playoff...
