Many of these projects promised by the previous Mayor were never funded beyond their initial design stages and had no money set aside to deliver them. To build them all now would require over £3bn in additional funding.
Does Boris think that the government just decides "Here TfL, here's £1.3bn, see if you can come up with a way of linking Peckham to Camden"? Surely its the job of a strategic body like TfL to plan future projects to the stage at which decisions can be made on implementation, and funding can be sought?!
The Way to Go document is almost embarrassing. "A holy war on holey roads" is a particular low point IMHO. Compared to the previously circulated 'Direction of Travel' document, which didn't say a huge amount different but did it in a more professional tone and with more specifics, its a big disappointment. Boris appears to have decided to wait until the Tories get in nationally to promote any new infrastructure projects - by which time TfL's sub-regional plans may have identified schemes in Bexley, Bromley, Barnet, Havering etc that he would rather spend money on to shore up votes.
The only really new thing he's doing is introducing a new bus - a drafty one at that, which costs twice as much to staff and will have to dwell for longer at stops, and with £200m to be spent developing it
I wonder if the statement he'll make when the first teenager dies after jumping off the back platform and under the bus behind will be all "oh cripes, golly"
