washable nappies

Are clips instead of nappy pins?? I preferred disposable liners tbh. Not a big fan of scrubbing to get rid of stains ;)

You'll need the modern equivalent of rubber pants. I hope they've improved!

yes, there seem to be plastic clips that can hold the things on without the risk of impaling baby on a pin.

and ok, one lidded bucket, for the things to sit in until they go in the machine?

(I really didn't have one when my daughter was young, until someone gave me that ancient old twin tub - I would not recommend hand washing shitty nappies to anyone!)

Been there, done that!! At least you got given a twin tub. I got given a single tub and mangle  :D
Ace for getting water out of nappies but shite for anything with buttons.

Where's the fun in that?? ;)

my youngest has just outgrown her size 1s would you like them? they're this kind. i don't have masses - half a dozen or so, nippa fastening. i used muslins for the first couple of months (that way you don't need as many shaped nappies cos you're not changing quite so often) and you're welcome to those too. pm me :)

Ok, I think i shall hve to bite the bullet and hit ebay to get some of this sutff, the prices there look a hell of a lot better than any other site I've looked at

if you can afford to choose go for bamboo. they're new since i got mine for no.1 but they're thinner and softer than the same absorbancy in cotton. especially good if you dry on radiators. once you're past newborn/sleepsuits (which i stretched out to 9+ mo i can't be arsed getting them dressed :) ) getting trousers to fit cotton nappies can be a challenge (if you have a girl and do dresses/tights it makes no odds). bamboo makes a much neater bum. (will let you know what i have tonight been on cleaning marathon today moving back in after builders...)

Try putting a want ad on Freecycle too first - my local one sometimes has them. I've just been given a big bagful of terry squares, Motherease popper nappies and Imse Vimse wraps by a friend whose youngest has just potty-trained. They've been through 4 kids already but still perfectly usable.

I used terries and Tots Bots nappies on and off with my older two (I gave them away just before I knew I was pregnant with no. 3!) and once you get your sytem sorted they're really no bother to use. I never soaked mine, I would just tip the solid poo off the fleece liners into the toilet then just kept the nappies in a bucket with a lid until it was full then washed at 60 degrees. Never had any problems with smell or stains. I haven't used them with a newborn though - might be necessary to soak them then.

the orangeness tends to stain quite a bit.

problem with freecycle atm is collecting stuff, dragging 2 kids out on public transport to go collect stuff sounds like hell

Oooh fair enough, I didn't realise it would be a bus job.

he wouldn't pay for mot and insurance and tax, because he doesn't drive so saw it mainly as a convenience for me to have a car (then complained about how long it took for him to get sutff he wanted without one)
