Warhammer Online

Thus far:

Pros

pvp balance in most respects
public quests
titles
the journal
pvp generally
some character modelling
anything to do with greenskins

Cons

GOA are in charge and are fucking rubbish
very samey loot
public quest rewards not being weighted correctly
ranged dps have far too many snares
chaos follows tzeentch, the most crap of all the dark powers

Flying saucers sound promising. Do they have lots of cool spaceships and a fully developed single-server economic model?

No and yes. Except the yes isnt really a yes yet - people are still working out what on earth about twenty* different kinds of watering can do.

What are the system requirements like? Will it run on my 2.4GHz dual-core with 4MB RAM, and an ATI Radeon HD2600? And is there a free demo or trial period?

Thats similar to my setup, and it runs it at a reasonably high detail level without problems. As for the trial, there isnt one at the moment - just the usual first month free when you buy it.

I've been playing it for a few days now and the pvp is really good in a group. I expect single duels would be as frustrating as in WOW.

The social aspect is lacking thou. Hardly anyone talks and I'm on an RP realm.

It's not like wow, it's more like a fantasy version of cod4... Ok maybe not but it's definately more action orientated.

At least you can lvl up just by playing the battlegrounds and public quests. Go to blah blah and kill 10 whatever sucks which is why I am dreading the WOW expansion.

Just bumped to say that I've now reached lvl 12 (Bright Wizard) on a RP RVR realm, joined a guild and it's all quite good fun. I'm just about getting out of the totally baffled stage and starting to relax a little. Players are starting to interact more, I think the initial silence as down to the confusion of learning a new and rather vast game.

People are wrongly comparing it to WoW, what they have done is replicated the table top battles of the original Warhammer. It's a really good fun mass combat game, far better in numbers than warcraft. Each class has a specific PVP role which has been designed specifically for mob battles. They have definately thought about PvP first and formost.

It's crazy how people instantly expect every fantasy rpg that comes out to be copying WoW. War is something completely different and great fun too. Yep it's actually fun to play rather than the status anxiety led greed and envy that pushes people into playing silly hours doing shite repetative crap on Warcraft.

I've always felt WoW to be quite evil in principal, it's elitest, brings out the worst in people and is specifically designed to be addictive and keep subscriptions coming in. Heh you might laugh but from day one I just thought it was a socialists nightmare.

War is simply fun and I hope it does as well as it deserves. So far it's been all adults and I've not heard one single "noob" or people showing off in battles.

Thanks for the review... now I am tempted! Can you be a Chaos warrior? I always like Tzeentch (sp?) the best anyway... I had an army (i.e I got bored chopped up all my miniatures with a scalpel and turned them, using super glue, into chaos spawn that i painted bright pink)

Yes. You can either be a chosen (tank / melee dipis) or marauder (melee dipis), unfortunately tzeentch is the only choice though. Mine is a Marauder, currently level 21, but bewailing the fact he cannot worship Papa Nurgle.

As Cloud says, RvR is really where this shines, its much more tactical than WoW and far more reliant on skill.

ive got a level 5 zealot now... i quite liked the marauder though. I had a crack at PVP and it was OK, i like being actually rewarded for healing! I don't think I have the graphics quite right on my system, it feels a little disconnected. I miss the cartoony feel of WoW. I'll give it a chance.. but in some ways I am not sure i can be bothered to learn another MMO!!

Grr, I'm tempted now... arrrr... I've been off the wagon since I cancelled my AoC sub a few months ago. I might have to give it a try though :hmm::hmm::hmm:

Im nt convinced. Either my graphics settings are wrong, my rig isnt powerful enough (does CoH, WoW, C&C and CoD4 maxed) or the graphics and spell effects are a ittle crap. The pve is a bit dhoddy too. The PvP was cool but the jerky animation and graphics piss me off, and I cant work out whether its my system or what. At least with WoW you feel like you connect with your target - even if the graphics are clipping.

mm it sounds like you have a problem cos tbh I think the system requirements are pretty low.

I've had it running on a 256mb X1950 pro and it ran really well on balanced setting. My main rig has a Radeon HD3870 which is probably equivalent to a 8800GT and it runs full detail 1680*1050 no problem.

I reckon it might be server lag or maybe a driver issue? I reckon it's probably lag, I've played at 4am and its much smoother.

If you can run COD4 it should definately run smooth.

I'm still enjoying it, don't feel like I'm doing repetative crap just to keep up the subs yet. You really do need loads of people around in the public quest areas to make them fun. On sunday we must have had 30+ people all doing the chapters and it was like a raid out in the open. No idea what the rest of the game holds yet.

GOA are fucking useless. My account expired on the 8th of October. The subscription system is meant to start working on the 9th (but still isnt, at least for me).

Yeah they need to sort out the forums and support, I dont think they have sorted a pre pay game card out yet and my game time runs out soon.

As an update to the game: I am now lvl 20 and finding a few flaws in the game. The worst is that it take alot of players to make the public quests work properly, the realms are not populated enough, god knows why they have so many, they should merge a few. It's only at the weekends you can find decent enough numbers.

I've actually come to realise that maybe people who play mmorpg's are not so social after all. I think in wow people actually like going off on their own, in WAR it's important to get grouped up in order to play the game as intended. You might find 20 people in a zone but not grouped?

I'd have liked to have seen a Trollslayer or a wardancer. I might get this when I've a bit more cash and they put the other capital cities in the game.
