War of the Worlds with Tom Cruise

Just a bit of fun, innit.

It's weird actually. Tom Cruise is clearly one of the most mental, strange, rather scary weirdos on the planet, but in films I find him totally likeable.

I kind of agree, although I don't think he's a great actor. Although maybe he is a great actor, since he is able to disguise his real nature, in a movie role.

He's actually not bad.

Mind you if I was the son of the Devil I'd want some sort of talent otherwise what would be the point.

I've made a vow to avoid his movies as much a possible, at least in terms of paying money to see them at the theater, thereby enriching him.

I dont want some loony, L Ron Hubbard-saluting twat to be getting my dollars.

I thought the first bit was really exciting.

Duff ending, yeah - but as has already been said - given the ending in the book, how else were they meant to play it.

And I thought Tom Cruise was good in it. So there :p

I feel much the same though I did pay to see WOTW - when I first saw it at the flicks it wasn't long after the July bombings in London and it really wasn't the film to see at that time as I found it profoundly depressing.

Saw it for a second time on DVD and enjoyed it much more (despite the Cruister who was exceeding unconvinving as a stevedore) however more as a general Sci-Fi film than a version of WOTW. There are some inconsistencies in it and things that I wasn't keen on but as a blockbuster sci-fi it was okay but as a version of WOTW there is I think a better one - other than the album - to be made

I enjoyed it, it's got some good set pieces, eg the ferry across the Hudson river, which underwater seems remarkably clean and un-muddy. The sense of social breakdown is captured well in parts. There are some allusions to the Holocaust to increase a pervasive feeling of doom: Cruise ending up covered in human ash (reminiscent of the rain of ash in Schindler's List), people's clothes discarded by the tripods, and the industrial-scale conversion of human beings to fertiliser. iirc in Wells's book the tripods didn't turn people into fertiliser, although they did feed on their blood.

The daughter and teenage son were both a bit irritating though imo.

I think War of the Worlds is brilliant. I wouldn't even describe it as a remake as it's merely set in the same time, telling someone else's story. If it was just a rip off of the book/film then fair enough, but it's a completely different story and credit to Spielberg for that. It's a great film that people have to say they hate!

It is an entertaining film. The rule of the film is that you see what Tom Cruise sees.

Except for when he kills the survivalist nut, and when he gets pulled up inside the tripod's red arsehole/sphincter thing, and lets off the hand grenade. You want to know what he saw inside the tripod, but you never will!

I enjoyed it. Not brilliant, but watchable.

Now if you want a brilliant alien invaders movie. Look no farther than Mars Attacks by Tim Burton. Much more enjoyable IMHO. :D;)

What a load of shite.

In the middle of a large metropolitan area with hundreds of people around during an emergency...fighting for a car....only 2 people have guns.

On the ship all 3 of them are saved by conveniently getting hit, but unhurt, by a car.

He just happens to find a belt of grenades 2 minutes before he needs them.

When trapped in a cellar, knocking over plates and tripping up...advanced alien technology can't hear them. Advanced alien technology also doesn't destroy building.

And don't even start me about the son.

WTF was this to do with war of the worlds?

Shows up many problems with the original story when you get as picky as dexter here.

Other than that, perfectly enjoyable bockbuster to switch off to for a couple of hours.

There is also a good radio drama from 30+ years ago with Peter Sallis.

Film is pretty good in bits.

Aliens, however, demonstrate the value of good research.

Thought it was pretty poor, no suprose really given Cruise was/is in it.

I've read the book and loved it, i'd love to see a film that stays faithful to the original story as opposed to the 2 American atrocities that have been made. The original story would make a brilliant film and perhaps a wee bit of help from Jeff Wayne who I though brought in some fantastic imagery especially the tripods.

It's rare that a soundtrack is better than a film. This is a rare happenstance. The OG film was great, the later soundtrack was beyond awesome.

This recent film was mehx2:(

Very well made in every department, but somehow it just doesn't work. Very gripping in the initial stages where the tripods appear but really flags by about half way through.

Felt sorry for the actress who played the little girl, by the time they finished shooting her voicebox must've been in a right state with all that screaming.

Dakota Fanning.

She's probably going to be okay voice-wise though, 'cos most of her roles seem to involve inordinate amounts of shrieking and screaming.

"Great Effects" !! which has now unintentionally become a widely-used euphemism for "shite script".

Actually that doesn't quite follow through as I love the H.G Wells original but it had Tom Cruise in it which is a fairly good litmus test for what it's going to be like and the Sci-Fi blockbusters never really muster up the same sort of nervous intrigue as some of the earlier films like Invasion of the body snatchers and the blob and the such.

Watched it for the first time this weekend, thought it was going to be a pile of shite, and then was totally gripped all the way through, even when I saw the plot holes (airplane falls, destroys everything but their car: very unlikely!!! but even there was still a very small chance of it actually happening, as the plain didn't blow up). I didn't read the book, so all I knew was that this was about aliens trying to exterminate people.

They way it was all seen from their perspective made it incredibly intense - not really knowing what was going on, slowly finding out what was happening and the fact that they weren't defeated by us at the very end, but by nature itself, made it one of the best sci-fi films I've seen in a long time. It also got nominated for lots of awards, and deservedly so, what an underrated film this is!

Hopefully it'll get the recognition it deserves eventually, once people put aside Tom Cruise's sillyness with scientology and just watch it without prejudice.

I did read the book so I am aware the there are quite a large amount of differences. Wells' estate were so unimpressed they wouldn't let them use the 'No one would of believed' lines without significant change. Change incidently which put a different slant on everything.

If it wasn't called War of The Worlds and hijack parts of an amazing novel which could be given a much better and more appropriate treatment I could maybe accept it as a passable summer blockbuster. As it is. No

They also released 'Journey to the center of the Earth' in 2008, and I was expecting it to be like the book, and it wasn't. Brendan Frasen did consult the book quite a lot throughout the film... So I can understand your disappointment. But at least War of the Worlds was good.
