Want a day off? Here's the best way to call in "sick"

That's very, very different from someone owning my time. And I have frequently pointed out to employers who've taken the piss (screaming at me for being 5 minutes late and then expecting me, on the same day, to work through to 10pm or later) that it's still my time, not theirs.

I agree that it cuts both ways and some employers take dreadful liberties with salaried employees' time.

Nonetheless they do have the right to have the final word on the matter.

A useful tool for mandatory return to work (post self-certified absence) interviewing:

Do you also refuse to take personal calls or pass the time with colleagues while at work?

I'm too scared to ever lie about being sick as a result of faking a sickie to go to Bulldog Bash several years ago, my house burning down whilst I was there, my boss assuming I was dead as was meant to be in bed sick and then when I managed to explain away that, she then seeing the article in the Haringay Gazette about the fire and the tenant 'fortunately being away at a 'rock festival' ....Took some more explaining.....Never lied again.

That's not really funny, I suppose, but of all the ways to be caught out... :D

Bollocks do they. Cut me some slack and I'll get you out of a hole and work late. Be a twat and I'll be a jobsworth and be leaving at 5.

If you want me to do it on a regular basis then find some cash to pay me overtime or get some more staff.

call your boss early the next morning. Do not delay because it will cause displeasure to your boss. And also you will want to avoid you boss from labeling you as a bad employee by not informing him or her early. Moreover, if you call early, you will have a rather rough voice after waking up. This will give you some added credibility

Don't over do it though or you just sound like your hamming it up.

Last time I was off sick, it was last year with that um-bongo virus or whatever its called.

I used to pull a sickies quite regularly when I was in the call centre tho'.

I bet untethered doesn't take his holiday allowance either.

I've been pretty good on the sickness front this year - last year when I had a huge amount of personal shit in my life my sick record was a bit poor, after being signed off work for 2 weeks with stress (family court shite), the boss had the fucking nerve to call me into his office, say that I had a "pattern of sick" (twat) and referred me to occupational health.

They were fine - I explained about the stuff in my life in general manner, then moved onto the stresses at work - pointing out that we have an increased workload, staff aren't replaced who leave, when staff who have parenting obligations come back part-time it means there is more workload spread around, there is also an unequal workload amongst staff, etc etc

The occy health bod nodded and knew about our department and asked if I wanted it on record - otherwise she wouldn't be able to do anything about it. She was pretty savvy actually, a doctor who was in the occy health dept of the NHS and knew about the stress that most NHS workers were under...

I figured that bollox to them, unless someone would have it officially on the record about stress then nothing would change, I'm not going to be there in 5 years time, so bollox to them.

... funnily enough, since then I've sorted out a lot of stuff in my life and my sick leave is fine. I don't take the piss (although the NHS 'owes' me 2 days annual leave as I was diddled out of 2 days leave under Agenda for Change - so I pull at least 2 sickies as 'compensation' :D) and my sick leave is fine.

We have this fucking stupid system whereby more than 3 instances of sick leave in 6 months and you're referred to occy health (1 instance is counted as 1 day) - so there is the incentive to not have a day off or a week off, as they are all counted as 'one instance' , so if you have kids and get loads of bug infections, you go along to occy health and say "hello, I've had colds/the shits/migraine etc" and it's all a box ticking exercise isn't it?

... so the added effect is that we have the 'mucus troopers' , people come in ill , spread their illness (because they don't want to get referred to occy health), we get more ill, the cycle continues, annoying to say the least it is!

nowadays when I'm ill, I make sure others know a day or so before that I'm feeling ropey then phone in the next day, saying to my line manager something along the lines of "I'm shitting through the eye of a needle" :p ... that usually covers it!
