I think that's an unfair stereotype. For every "England are gonna win the world cup" type (usually people who don't watch football much) there are 10 times as many England fans who constantly expect failure...

I myself don't think a Welsh victory is at all out of the question...

I do and even if they do win, we're still going to Germany and they ain't. Arrogant maybe but its still true.

Hmm... I wouldn't fancy England in a playoff against France or Czech Republic...

If wales do win it's pretty tough for us to come first in the group...

How? As long as we beat Poland we can afford to lose one game.

As for the play offs, if history is anything to go by the biggest teams in there will avoid one another by fair means or foul.

As a neutral, I'm just looking forward to seeing a first class entertaining game between two talented teams of professionals.

Wales to win 5-0. Or failing that, a 0-0 draw.

I suppose. But we always leave it so agonisingly close...

There is a tendency to read too much into single results. Italy lost away to Slovenia yet nobody is betting against them finishing top of Scotlands group. I think its pretty certain everyone else in Europe will expect England to qualify top of the group even if Wales win today.

Nah, it's more the general trend. 1998 qualifying - left it until the final away game in Italy. 2000 - left it to Sweden to beat Poland so we made the playoffs, barely, and then scraped through those after that appalling game against Scotland at Wembley. 2002 - contrived to nearly lose to Greece (a team we should have beaten comfortably at home) until 'that' freekick. 2004 - left it until the away game in Turkey, a game we could easily have lost...

Are you serious re Turkey, they barely had a shot on target.

I don't know about you but expecting us to win the group comfortably with Italy there was a mighty ask.

And qualifying comfortably is no guarantee of success in the tournament. France went to Euro 92 and the last World Cup with a 100% record and flopped both times.

Oh, yeah on the night they were crap, but before that they had been playing much better than us. There was no need, for instance, for us to fail to beat Macedonia...

2-1 England for me. They'll just shade it. 4-5-1 will be a disaster and they'll revert to 4-4-2 at half time and snatch a victory after playing awfully.

Hey ... I'm a realist! ;) :D

No predictions from me, and no time to read through this thread, so someone may have said this already.

But i see ian wright has timed it perfectly to register his incomprehension at sven getting the job, that the man has no charisma, and no heart.

I loved him as a player, but what is with these fuckers undermining their successors just before games take place? Is the sound of their mouth more important than national unity before a game? What're the players gonna think when they read in the paper about their boss being no good? What's the boss gonna think?

It's this kind of thing that i reckon is england's permanent handicap, ex-players, 'experts', media sorts, and other assorted pundits all spouting their negative crap just before games.

Just what players need eh.

This is my favourite:

"I'd love to be a mole on the wall in the Liverpool dressing room at half-time."

*image of mole desperately clinging to tiled wall trying to be inconspicuous*

I had high hopes for Wales before the old trafford game and they were soundly outclassed (one of the worst games of football I remember).

Sadly, I reckon that wales will fall apart and get a hiding.

in the bookies down my road, in CARDIFF!
they have an 'england expects' poster with a massive angry bulldog and it says england v Wales  typical tossers, england is in big type and Wales just in marker pen in the blank box

10/1 giggs scoring first

Listening to this on the radio currently. Sounds like Wales are putting up more of a fight than at Old Trafford--I was at that game, and we were dreadful, while England were very good indeed. Hang on though, England have just made a very silly substitution...

We won, but only barely. Wales could easily have equalised late on.

I don't see the logic of taking off your best player and your goal scorer when the game isn't yet wrapped up.

1-0 England my prediction.

Dunno about anyone else, but it felt like a friendly to me today; I was expecting blood and thunder from Wales, but there wasn't any.

England didn't really get into top gear, Wales always look dangerous from set-pieces with big John up front, and it took a fine save from Robbo to keep him out.

Verdict: moribund affair.

Is there any logic to playing your star man as a lone striker when he excells in the withdrawn role? Is there any logic to playing with one striker due to suspension when you have a ready-made replacement champing at the bit after a great start to the season?
