Vortex Being Evicted!

local people? middle class trendies .. most of the local people have been evicted years ago .. used to be a mixed race street 20 years ago .. now been ethnically cleansed ... the vortex occupiers got it totally wrong .. church street itself and all its trendies are the criminals here  :(

White middle-class immigrants have to live somewhere.

Hmmm, its difficult to agree that all the poor have been evicted, there's plenty of council flats still around...

out of date mate .. most of them private rented now ..

but of course not ALL the poor have gone .. they should have been the focus of any action in this area .. it is THEY who are excluded .. i do not give a flying fuck for the trendies who don't want a starbucks ..

Come on, let's face it - evictions are a perfect time for you all to indulge in some righteous indignation about 'the system' and how bad it is.

I mean come on - it's squatted, so at some point the chances are you'll be evicted. Don't wanna be evicted pay rent on somewhere.

I do wish people would not use inflammatory terms like "ethnically cleansed" to describe an area changing.

"Ethnic cleansing" suggests illegal, violent forced eviction of a community, esp. by one racial group of another.

This did not happen, did it?

why does 'cleansing' have to be violent? the community has been moved on .. it suits the middle classes that these things are NOT violent .. less to feel guilty about .. the effect though is not dissimilar ..

Like bollocks are they.

council estate houses and maisonettes in n16 are majority private now .. but you are right that most flats are still council ..

.. my point though was that the effect though is that the best places have gone and the worst remain council .. and the people in those should have been what the squatters were interested in not the yuppies

Who can make people leave?

If the current people owned their own houses / flats, only they can choose to sell up and move (people often do, when an area becomes "posher" because they can sell for a big profit).

If they are in any sort of social housing, they are not affected by gentrification really.

So its only those in private rented who could POSSIBLY be MADE to leave. And that is a small minority, especially of long-term residents. Most private renters are the more transient anyway.

So, this talk of people being "ethnically cleansed" is largely rubbish.

Maybe, as a different social group move into an area in large numbers, some of the longer-term residents want to move because they don't like the incomers (a bit like so-called "white flight" when blacks move into an area) but this is still not being forced out, is it?

Excpet when the council/HA decides to sell off the social housing to the developers, forcing the tenants to be scattered far and wide...

Did this happen on a significant scale?

And if so, what did they do with the former tenants? Surely a council would have to make provision to house them still, unlike a private landlord who could simply give them notice?
