Volunteering

Befriending work with people with mental health problems is a good one - I want to do it when I can find the time. A lot of mentally ill people have no support networks and very seldom get out of the house unless someone gives them reason to. Just being to talk to someone and go for a coffee could mean a lot to an isolated person experiencing mental illness.

Hiya.
I've got some free time and I'd like to do something with it.
I used to volunteer for Barnardos, but I can't lie, I only did it because my friends worked there and it was a laugh. It was good for socialising, but not very rewarding.
If you forgive the cliche, I like children and animals :D I've also had a full CRB check.
I live in South London and would like to do something locally.
What's worthy? Where do I start?

Check out that mob attached to the family court process.

Or you could become somebody's big sister! That would be fun.

Vauxhall City Farm? Kids and animals. :hmm:

Very good advice! CAB work isn't much fun - my brother's done it. Getting involved in peoples' intractable problems is pretty draining.

City farms - yes! Mudchute (though not South London) is a lovely one, too. Jobs in places like that are probably gold dust, but volunteering's definitely the way in. Good luck Pip! Follow your passions :)

i did voluntary work in a film archive some years ago, spending all day watching footage about all manner of things. would have been the best job i'd had if it had been paid. you could maybe do something interesting like that

I think I'm going with VCF. There's probably a waiting list for volunteers :D but it's a great suggestion.
